I don't really go to restaurants, to me food is something basic and it's expensive enough in market stores without having to go to restaurants so forgive me if on top I wouldn't tip.

But that's just me

It really depends on the service. Usually I tip 20%. Sometimes more, a few times I've left less, a couple times nothing. One time the food/service was so bad I told the manager to call the cops if he needed to because I wasn't paying. He actually called the cook and waitress out to the table and tore into them. He cave me 3 of his business cards with 25% off written on the back. But I saw the movie Waiting, and have never been back.

I usually tip, especially if they do a great job. I've been there, I know it sucks working at restaurants. If they are rude and never show up, then I don't give them much if any at all. So anywhere from 20% for good service, and 0-5% for bad service (depends how bad).

20-25% sometimes a lot more on small bills (like $5 on a $15 bill, just so I don't have to deal with change etc) but when you're talking about a dinner for two, for the wife and I, if it's $100 + it's usually right at 20% unless they do something extra-special....

P.S. this assumes I'M the one paying...

We've been limiting our "going out" especially since I'm a pretty good cook if I do say so myself.

In MN the tax is 6.5%, so I usually multiply by 3 to get the tip, if the service is good.

I’m wondering though – I only tip if someone is waiting on me. I have been in coffee shops where there is a tip jar at the register. To me, the person pouring my coffee is simply doing their job, and does not deserve a tip. It would be like tipping the kid at the register at MacDonalds. Likewise to someone who rang me up for my take out order – they simply retrieved my food, they didn’t wait on me. And what about bartenders? Aren’t they just doing their job?

i tip anywhere from 0-33% most of the time its right around the 20% mark though.

0% comes rarely, but it has happened on 1-2 occasions.

EDIT: N/M misread your post.

you do realize that a waiter's standard hourly wage is usually less than min. wage. all the waiters i know get like $3.50/hr. + tips.

The tip jar is just there, It may get spilt but its just extra money. Those employees get a wage of minimum or better unless they are actually waiting tables

20% unless they suck. Only go out about once a month now though. Saves so much money.

Same here. I think no matter what the minimum is $5. Even going to Steak N Shake where your total bill comes to $12 for me and the GF yesterday I gave the highschool kid $5. Then tips go up from there. Most times I tip about 30% or so.

and the other thing is if you go to a place late at night (like 1-6 in the morning) you should always tip double.

this is because places get considerbly less service late at night and the waiters will make considerbly less with a 12 AM - 6 AM shift than a 12 PM to 6 PM shift. make it up to them, its there hard, crappy hour work that allows you to go to steak n shake at 3 in the morning wasted off you butt.
