Default PS3 won't recognize DVDs

Hello. I've got a 40GB PS3 which has been incredible. I love everything about it. However, I tried playing a DVD and it was not recognized. Is there some sort of setting I need to enable or change? This is kind of troublesome. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A movie DVD. I tried "The Little Mermaid" and then tried "Revenge of the Sith" with no disc recognition, whatsoever.

maybe it has something to do with the 40gb models having no reverse compatibility with ps2 and ps1 games... i dont know

The reason the 40s are not PS2 BC compliant is that they don't have the Emotion Engine in them, nor an Emotion emulator. It doesn't have anything to do with the DVD itself. It would be nuts for Sony to release a 1080p upconverter without the ability to play said DVDs. Unfortunately, I can't imagine what could be wrong that your DVDs can't be seen. There *are* certain settings specifically for the upconversion, but I doubt they affect reading the discs themselves.

Odd note, apparently upconversion isn't a "word" yet

Is it recognizing other types of discs? Games, blu-rays, cd's?

What he suggested. Sometimes the OPU (optical pick-up) needs to reset itself to read a different kind of disc. So play a CD/BD and then put those same DVDs back in. Or put other DVDs and THEN the DVDs that won't play.
