Default Rumor: PSN Cards not coming to Gamestop until 2009

source: www.ps3.qj.net
http://ps3.qj.net/Rumor-PSN-Cards-no.../49/aid/123281

Tipster StormShatter wrote to us here at QJ tipping us about the PSN cards not coming to GameStop until 2009. He says he's a GameStop employee, and even sent us a picture of the memo (click on the image above to enlarge, and take note of the clause enclosed in a red box) that was circulated in their office regarding this bit.

According to the email they received yesterday, GameStop will not be carrying PlayStation Network cards until next year because of a register software upgrade. Says StormShatter (verbatim):

.... one reason that nobody probably would've expected for that. Not sure how register software will have to do with selling these things, unless they're activated in-store, as opposed to MS Points cards, where there is no activation involved. Hopefully other major retailers won't follow GameStop's example this holiday season.

Well that kinda sucks. I mean, a lot of people in North America have been waiting for the arrival of the PSN cards ever since. We'll be following up on this bit of news, so keep your eyes peeled out for more updates.

Do you pay sales taxes on PSN cards or other gift cards? I've never bought one. I figure that giving cash to my nephews is always better because it's a gift card for anything.

If true, wouldn't this suggest that PSN cards _will_ be available through _other_ retailers than GameStop _before_ 2009?

(Hopefully big national ones like BB, CC etc.?)

For what would be the point of emailing your employees to say your register software doesn't yet support sale of a product which isn't available anyway?

Oh for god's sake, 2009 for GameStop US? Just think how long it will be until we get them in the EU (hopfully, not long after because of the software update like grim said).

Because people like me don't want to put our credit card information (ANY credit card) into such a mechanism. You can say it's secure blahblahblah but that doesn't matter because people don't want to change. Some people like there coffee black, some with sugar and cream, some splashed in other people's faces and they don't want to change. Get used to/over it.

I would have to say that's a mistake on the store's behalf. I've bought multiple types of gift cards (iTunes, MS Points, BB, Gander Mountain, Half Price Books, etc.) and none of them came with taxes. Now that being said, I've never bought a PSN money card so I can't speak to that, just to what I think it should be.

Why in God's name is it taking so long? It's just a fricking gift card. How hard could it possibly be to distribute them?

Also, you admitted that it's only because you're too stubborn to change. Well whose fault is that? Just saying.

No one's fault, just a way of life. Plus, what's wrong with more choices?

Nothing really. I can see your point, I just don't think your excuse is valid. "I don't to change" isn't nearly as good as "I don't want to use my credit card on my game console/internet". While I don't think the 2nd concern is necessarily something to be worried about, I can at least understand the point of view. What I can't appreciate is just being stubborn, which is the way you came across... whether you meant to or not. See what I mean?

No hard feelings, I was just pointing something out.

I do see your point, I was a little grumpy when I posted the message. I just get irritated a little bit when this topic comes up because instantly there is at least one post if not more saying "just use a credit card". Also, it's not really me but mostly my wife that is skittish around such things. I was paying for FFXI on the 360 with our bank card (MC), and I canceled the subscription for two reasons: mainly because I wasn't really enjoying the game, and also because of the fact that they had access to our bank account with the card that I was using (they wouldn't take AmEx, only MC/Visa).

I wouldn't mind having a CC with a smallish limit, maybe under $500, for stuff like this, but until me and my wife are on the same page we will wait patiently for these PSN cards to hit the streets in DFW.

And for those of you prone to do this, I'll beat you to the punch: and and proud of it!

thats a good reason for you since it doesn't exist in Canada.

If it does exist (US) I see no prob with using a gift card. Seems like the simple solution.

and for the visa gift card, if i'm not mistaken i don't think those work. I think there were a few threads saying that they didn't work.
