BB chose not to go by the MSRP.

I believe that the sony playstation 3 is $100 more in Canada then it is in the states. This is just the way that sony wanted to price their console. The ps3 has done well, dispite the high price tag, because one million units have already been sold. The only problem is that there are only a dozen launch games and some games were pushed back several months. Some games like tony hawks project 8 and call of duty 3, you can play on the xbox 360. I know that $700.00 may be a lot to ask for a system, but keep in mind that most people don't really care about the price because if everyone thought that the console was too much then sony won't have a million units shipped out by the end of 2006. It looks like games are $10.00 then in the states. I don't know why everyone complains about the high cost of games because games have always cost at least $50.00, even back the middle 1990's. You do get a freebie blu-ray player because the ps3 will function as one. The 60 GB model is higher in demand and it's easier to apply updates to the system software.

The MSRP's in Canada

$549 for the 20GB
$659 for the 60GB

BB/Future Shop specifically jacked up the price blaming it on the CDN dollar - but oddly didn't change the pricing of the 360 which you would assume has to deal with CDN dollars as well..curious.

Yes despite the smear campaign about the PS3 being too expensive - another one from AOL today - the 60GB are clearly the SKU everyone wants. Which kind of puts the lie to it being so expensive - if people actually thought that then the 20GB would have been the big seller not the 60GB.

Must be real disheartening to MS that despite all their efforts to paint the PS3 as way too expensive it's the more expensive 60GB that everyone is gobbling up. Guess the value is just too good to pass on That's why Europe is only getting the 60GB - it was an overwhelming choice for the previous launch regions - so why bother with the 20GB at this point.

Point being is that the ps3 seems to be higher priced in Canada then in the states. Microsoft must hate sony's guts for the ps3. I mean, some people think that the xbxo 360 should rule and for some reason microsoft is combating sony's blu-ray disc with an xbox 360 add-on, but the bottom line is that if you don't have a 25 or 50 GB disc, there is no way to match blu-ray. It would be like trying to play a video clip on broadband vs dialup. It just doesn't work. Sony wants everyone that gets the ps3 to be online, but what you do with your ps3 is up to you. The 20 GB model is lower in demand, but some people want it. Looking at the pricing, sony is at the top, nintendo is at the bottom and microsoft is right in the middle.

I dont see why there is all these arguments about whose the cheapest and sony are far to expensive, all customers have to do is actually look at what you get with each machine and the specs to see why the prices are set like thay are.
One thing that slightly grinds my gears, is the fact that many people in the UK are not going to buy the PS3 because they say its too expensive at £425. Now i know we pay more than the Americans, but thats the way its always been, so us gamers are used to it, but this is what bugs me the most
I happened to be working for a company called GAME (UKs version of EB) when the 360 was released, and i personally didnt sell a 360 any cheaper than £1000, (Dont know what that is in $ but its a massive mark up in price) And this is because we were told by the company that every 360 had to go out as a package deal, There was some pissed off 360 fans that day, but they all still bought the machines. YET THESE ARE THE SAME PEOPLE WHO SAY THE PS3 IS TOO EXPENSIVE.

i know this doesnt help the original poster but i hate this price war stuff it bugs. Anyway that was my $0.02

I paid 751.00 with taxes for the big boy PS3 at EB Games up at Yonge and Steeles (Toronto) and that's what the price should be. I think it's 599.00 before taxes.

Yup, I've said it before.
The English are the ones being really ripped off this time. I'll do a search to find my post.

~~edit~~
I've found it. It's here.

And yes we are getting ripped off. We are all here in Europe. We are having later launches, higher prices... And we are sick of it.

The PS3 for example:
Japan: November 11, 2006 @ Y47,600 ($411.02 or €314.18 or £212.78) and 'open price'
USA: November 17, 2006 @ $499 (€381.44 or £258.34) and $599 (€457.87 or 310.11)
Europe: March 2007 @ €499 ($652.79 or £337.96) and €599 ($783.62 or £405.69)
UK: March 2007 @ ??? and £425 ($820.92 or €627.52)

PS: These prices are accurate and verified on the 25th or November '06
Now know, that exchange rates have already changed...

Rip Off? In Aus we will see our first PS3's on the 23/02/07, cost of a 60GB machine will be AUS $999. Given that the Canadian$ and Australian$ are approx on par who is being ripped off? on top of that it is expected that our games will be priced around AU$120. I have pre orded my PS3 and like many others in the lucky country feel that it represents value.

yeah. over on joystiq you have pepole talking bout the same issue with price. Most of the people that are complaining are not from Austraila. Every now and then and Austrailian will contribute to the discussion with the fact that its expected to cost more money and its well known that it would and this is not news at all, only to be ignored by the haters who dont live down under....

I wouldn't actually blame Sony for the pricing of the PS3. But my argument is, as a common maket with Europe and Global econmy we are still being charged the most - IN THE WORLD and expect to wait the longest. i WOULD however, blame the English Government because of there SH1TE import and duty laws. No wonder Sony banned the export of the PS3 from America and the Far East. They'd be loosing on average £200 per unit!

If you're in Canada you just take the ad from another store like EB to FS or BB and they have to price match it taking off an additional 10% of the difference.

Problem solved.

Price matching - incredibly underused.
