I hope they don't mess it up with a letterboxed version as they did the DVD.
You could see part of the picture was missing, god I hated that

What are you talking about? If the DVD release had been improperly framed, I'm pretty sure there would have been an uproar about it. I don't remember any such issue, so I think you might have your facts wrong. Or maybe they screwed it up across the pond where you are, but here in the U.S. I don't believe there was any such issue.

I thought the DVD was made to fit 16:9 not letterboxed to 4:3 as they used to do with some VHS and a lot of laser discs

Only the very first release, there was a major reissue years ago with proper anamorphic and loads of extras.
