Default High Definition Studios - How are they doing overall?

Most people know I keep a spreadsheet showing the averages of all the scored titles from High Def Digest, Home Theater Spot, Home Theater Forum, DVD Talk and Upcoming Discs.

I thought it would be interesting to show it broken down by studio.

Here are the results.

Picture Quality
Code:
PQ	Studio
 4.17 Buena Vista
 3.94 Paramount
 3.93 Warner
 3.91 Weinstein
 3.86 Universal
 3.84 Fox
 3.78 Lionsgate
 3.60 Sony

Sound Quality
Code:
SQ	Studio
 4.35 Buena Vista
 4.10 Fox
 3.98 Lionsgate
 3.97 Paramount
 3.96 Sony
 3.72 Universal
 3.64 Warner
 3.57 Weinstein
PQ/SQ Overall Average.
Code:
Total	Studio
 4.26 Buena Vista
 3.97 Fox
 3.95 Paramount
 3.88 Lionsgate
 3.79 Universal
 3.78 Warner
 3.78 Sony
 3.74 Weinstein
And there you have it. BVHE is hands down showing how to get it done.

Roll on Pirates and Cars.

Keep in mind the titles like Robocop, T5E and HOFD were scored on three of the review sites, which definitely did not help Sony one bit.

Crazy considering Robocop isn't on release yet and it will likely be a new master when it is!

Yeah I know - but I've never excluded one title even though some HD DVD zealots seem sure that the poor titles like T5E were left off.

I've even uploaded the spreadsheet over at HDD so people can see if for themselves.

First off, this is a brilliant idea recomputing the data this way! Thank you!

Comments:

- There have been generally no differences in the scores given to same BD and HD DVD titles from Paramount and Warner, correct?

- It isn't even close: BVHE is kicking arse! PQ significantly better, AQ to the moon! A 0.29 overall gap to second place. WOW!

- Notice the bottom three for AQ? Warner (who won't use BD right) and the two HD DVD exclusives. But, as we know, DD+ is good enough.

- Sony has been putting out some amazing quality in recent months. I will be interesting to revist this in coming months.

It was released extremely briefly and then yanked. That doesn't stop it being the poster child for rdjam zealotry.

Warner titles did get better AQ scores on a couple of films, because they had TrueHD.

Glad to see a BD exclusive studio smashing all others and setting the bar for HD releases.

LPCM smashes DD+ in all aspects.

And I happen to think T5E looks fine, and HOTFD has great color but the image is a little soft/noisy.. mmm... like watching a outstanding foreign film Scope Technicolor print of great colour on a regular theater these days! (the reason I don't go to theaters so much ). The colors look so rich, I find it a pleasure to watch even if it's not the sharpest transfer.

Right, I was refering to PQ scores. We all know Warner is getting deservedly chastised for the AQ on Blu-ray. The HD DVD fanbois call this giving the consumer a choice?! It's about making sure there is really no choice unless it is leaning toward HD DVD.

One title with LPCM. At least it was a great one.

Two counting Sopranos. There will be more.

Now it would be really interesting if we see one with LPCM when the HD DVD does not have lossless audio... that will cause some creeching I am sure!

You're welcome.

Sony have been lowered because of T5E, HOFD, Robocop, etc. Their recent releases have been way better and I'm sure the trend will continue.

HD DVD and Blu-ray releases from Paramount and Warner only differences have been where Warner uses TrueHD on HD DVD and shafts Blu-ray. Other than that the PQ is almost always identical.
