Lightbulb EBay lowering fixed-price sellers' listing fees

By Alexandria Sage

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters)

Quote:
EBay Inc is cutting the fees U.S. sellers on its site pay for fixed-price items, in one of the company's boldest moves this year to boost merchandise for sale, lure new buyers and take on competitors.
Quote:
Instead of charging sellers to list each item separately, eBay will charge 35 cents to list any number of the same types of fixed-price items. Similar changes will be made in Germany and Britain, eBay's second- and third-largest auction markets.
Quote:
The move, effective September 16, is a bid to reduce the clutter of similar items on eBay -- 100 pairs of white socks will now be sold as a group, for example. The change is timed to boost business heading into the crucial holiday season.

Default New Changes to the Maximum shipping Allowed

Starting October, limits on shipping and handling charges* will be in effect for select categories. These maximums apply to the first flat-rate shipping service within or into the U.S. Sellers are required to offer at least one shipping option within the maximum and may also offer other options above the maximums for expedited or international shipping. Sellers can still use the shipping calculator to charge actual costs at or below the maximums or if their listings are not standard

DVDs & Movies Looks like maximum shipping allowed will be 3.00 for movies, good news for buyers

Default Another update

Driving more sales with a more consistent buyer experience
We're taking other steps to ensure buyers keep coming back to eBay:
No more checks and money orders

Beginning late October 2008, all items listed on eBay.com must be paid for using one of the following approved payment options:
Direct credit or debit card payment via a merchant credit card account
PayPal
ProPay
Payment on pick-up
Paper payment methods such as checks and money orders will no longer be accepted on eBay.com.

By January 2009, all approved electronic payment methods will be integrated into eBay checkout. For example, buyers will be able to enter their credit card number directly into eBay checkout, and the payment will be routed to the seller's Internet merchant account or to their PayPal account.

Whelp, that's it, no more e-bay for me. I used money orders instead of paypal online because I hated how paypal was owned by e-bay.

Ill get right on that.......... I am done selling on ebay after Oct. Its not bad enough people scam you by claiming non receipt, I cant set my own shipping. To get mailers, tape, paper , ink etc it costs more than the .50 they are allowing. Now forbid you ship a heavy boxset...........They are saying you have to offer at least one 3.00 option, well media mail is slow I am done.

First feedback, now this. Buyers can have it, but wont do no good if there are no sellers. Back to Amazon for me

Thumbs down No more money orders, $4 max to ship games, DSR with 4.3 or higher

All movie/game sellers should read this:

http://pages.ebay.com/sell/August2008Update/OtherFAQ/#3

Starting in October, ebay will no longer allow sellers to accept money orders and personal checks as payment. Sellers will only be able to accept payments through paypal or merchant credit card accounts.

Fixed price listings will now charge a 15% commission.

Ebay is also introducing shipping maximums on all media items, games, movies, cds, etc.

Also, ebay is really stepping up their seller evaluation based on their detailed seller ratings (those stars in your seller feedback profile) If you have any DSR category with a score lower than 4.3, you will not be able to list on ebay or half.com.

There are a lot of new policies coming into effect, and I'm really starting to wonder if ebay's worth my time anymore.

There also cracking down on shipping prices which is a good thing. I sold two cd's last week and when I listed them I always list for 5 dollars. I got a message saying I won't be able to list at this price anymore come october (I think then) and will have to list for 3 dollars shipping. It's fine with me. I rarely sell on ebay. I ended up paying 11 dollars extra out of my pocket today to get a cd to the guy by tomorrow before the hurrican hits charleston. He says he has to split before friday.

the shipping fees are what stopped me from buying on EBay...this is a good sign for them, IMO...people charged way too much to ship things.

This is great. I hated sellers who would charge you $5-$10 on shipping, and when the items came, the shipping label would have the $3.24 shipping charge printed on it. I dont mind paying for shipping, IF IM PAYING FOR SHIPPING! Dont overcharge on that just to make more money.

I do 4.99, covers the postage, the envelope(I buy the correct padded mailers) tape, ink, etc. All that stuff costs money and is in the handling aspect of it. I will offer the 3.00 shipping but I will be like Amazon, It gets last priority and will be shipped within 3-5 days. I usually ship everyday. Nobody I know of has ever gotten rich selling 15.00 movies
I wanna see someone ship a wii fit for 4.00

You can set the actual shipping cost via shipping calculator. Doesn't have to be fixed cost.

No exceptions, There has to be a 3.00/4.00 shipping..bottom line or it wont let you list the item. You can have an actual shipping option but you must have a 3.00/4.00 option.

Sellers can still use the shipping calculator to charge actual costs at or below the maximums or if their listings are not standard -- e.g., if you're selling an unusual large/ or heavy item, or a bundle-you can also use the shipping calculator to charge actual costs. See FAQs for more details.
and they will be watching those people who crook the system, and we know who that is Others are report happy and ebay will close listings
Quote:
How will the shipping calculator work with these shipping limits?
We recommend the shipping calculator to be used for items that are being sold in a bundle, quantity, or larger/heavier than the average item listed in the category you are listing in. We will monitor items using the shipping calculator to make sure that those that are over the limit differ from the assumptions that we used to establish the maximum shipping costs.
