Default Need Help on Home Theater Choice

I am looking at purchasing a Surround sound system in the next two weeks a few years ago I had the M&K 750THX 5.1 set up running off a dennon receiver not sure what model though.

My Budget is about $3000.00 For speakers and receiver I have a ps3 for my player too. I would love for your opinions on what I should look into purchasing, if it makes a lot of difference I may be able to add another 500.00 in the budget.

Thanks

you should have kept your M&K and just upgraded the receiver, it will be hard to down grade from M&K - Deftech or Klipch and Denon or Onkyo receiver stop by at the store and try them out.

You certainly have a good budget to play with. I'll recommend a subwoofer right now, and leave the rest for later, (I'm sure the other guys will have much better suggestions on a receiver... I dropped $1000 on a Sony STR2100ES that I'm very happy with, but everybody else seems to agree that I wasted my money).

If I had your budget to play with, I would get this subwoofer:

There are better, but they'd use up your whole budget. This guy has a lot of power and a great sound, without costing two-grand.

Not a big fan of Klipsch speakers. They're good, but I don't think they're worth the money; the Harman brands are a better deal. JBL are a better value, I think they sound just as good, and they cost a lot less. For the kind of money you'd spend on Klipsch, you may as well just go top-end.

Also, if you don't have one already, I'd set aside a couple hundred bucks for a power conditioner. If you're going to be putting together a sound system that big, you're going to need it. Also consider including an amp in that budget... Li'l Louie showed an Emotiva the other day that was awesome bang for the buck.

Should have kept the M&K's - with your budget I can only see you making a lateral move from those speakers. (If you still have the M&K's keep them and use the $3000.00 for seperates) . If the M&K's are gone - I will get back with you today on a system.

I have found a few places on the net where I can get another set of the M&K's for about 2 grand I did love that set up. But I am willing to try something else since the company is no longer producing or if every one thinks M&K is still all that I may just hunt them down too.

What do you guys think of the B&W 683 theater series? This is one of the only other systems that caught my eye besides the M&K's its a little more expensive though.

www.overstock.com still carries a number of great M&K surround setups, and the deals on them are fantastic. It's worth checking out, because the sound quality, detail, and bass accuracy will be hard to beat in that price range. Buying a good package off Overstock will still leave you around $1,300 to work with. Plus, shipping is $2 everyday, unless they're running a free shipping special. That's a great deal considering the weight of M&K systems.

There are quite a few B&W owners on the forum that like them immensely. My father in law has some (not sure of the models- some nice floorstanders and a large center) and honestly they sound really harsh to me. However, I have no idea of his setup or configuration. He also has the damn tv way too loud 'cuz he's half deaf.

I'd recommend NHT speakers. There's something about them that I've always liked. Very musical yet they are still able to be top notch for movies. The Classic series is something I'd look into.
