It is just another form of dvd upconversion that many dvd players already possess. It has been hashed out on other forums but it mostly looks like a last ditch effort by Toshiba to prevent Blu-ray from taking over dvd as the home video standard. The problem is that only so much resolution can be squeezed out of the information contained on a standard dvd. 1080P always beats 480P...

Exactly. Also my PS3(and other BD players) are great at upconverting DVDs already. The PQ quality on my PS3 player when playing a DVD is very clean looking, albeit, not as clean as a BD since it's like near or if not just plain flawless.

OMG are they ever going to quit this ? I've never seen a company so eager to play the sore loser in a format war. Companies are about money, not pride at least not that much. They should have begun producing Bluray Players a while ago instead of stubbornly butting against a wall as they keep doing.

Seriously, make a blu ray player that can do what you just said and people will buy it. Why are they SO intent on destroying blu ray? Are they that sore?
Blu ray players do need to price drop soon or it may not take off as much as alot hope. This X-mas season is going to be GGGRREEEEAAAATTTT ![]() |

I know. I preject that it will be either in or after 2010 when BD is the new standard. It's on the way to being the Standard but it's not gonna happen for another few years.

I think I encountered one of these newly shipped "XDE" players last weekend at Fry's. I was curious to read the printing on the box. Yes literally, they had not even unpacked the device for the demo shelf. They actually put the still-packed box on the demo shelf.
![]() Anyways, there wasn't much description on the box about anything special about what this upsampling feature is all about. It was just the 3-letter moniker cited as "a" feature. I think it was $159 or something? First thing I thought, who's going to pick up this $159 dvd player that is set on a shelf next to an array of other sub $100 dvd players? ![]() Maybe they will have a properly setup demo this weekend... |

2010 might be too soon. Probably around that time we might see the beginnings of the shift towards blu-ray. Remember, it took dvd years before it became the standard. On a personal note, I don't know why Toshiba is being so difficult to just accept blu-ray? Also, a lot of older dvd's look really bad upscaled to 1080p.

Id say 2011-2012 when you see a shift of maybe 50-50 bd vs dvd. Remember, not everyone owns a HDTV yet, which, is obviously key to wanting a BD player.

why do we need a new thread on this crap every couple of days? It's a mediocre upscaler from a company that thinbks people are dumb enough to buy into their BS marketing.

At least they had the good sense not to compare directly with blu-ray. "The look and sound of perfect" couldn't beat us. This is Toshiba grasping at straws. But don't discount what this could do for the future of blu-ray players. When Toshiba gets over themselves maybe they will license the technology and we will see it in blu-ray players. That would be a good thing. If 4K displays become a consumer reality this could work for upsampling blu-ray. |

I'll buy it if it is around $50. What? $149? I guess I'll stick with my PS3.

It's like a game.
My step dad for example, recently bought a nice HDTV but has the notion that Blu Ray is just too expensive. So... a product like this sits there at the store. It's more then the $40 players and still half the price of the actual solution to the problem (a Blu Ray player that would enable Blu Ray as well as upconvert DVDs.) So,.. he starts considering it and asking about it. It's a trap. Tempt people to put a band aid on the problem when the same people would be better served by just stepping up to the new and better way to enjoy movies at home. Toshiba - Go home already. -Brian |
