Spielberg, Eastwood, Scorsese and others are great filmmakers, but I also like following younger ones and see how they develop their styles and careers. Currently that is difficult for filmmakers, because the huge budgets constrain creativity. Which makes strokes of genius all the more remarkable.

You can also say why.
![]() In my case, even though I am a big Darren Aronofsky fan, I admit that he still hasn't proved himself. Pi was interesting, but a little too film school. Requiem for a Dream was great, but when I watched The Fountain I was mildly disappointed (I liked it better with repeated viewings). Christopher Nolan, for his part, has created one of the masterpieces of modern film noir with Memento, rebuilt the Batman myth and put Shyamalan to shame with The Prestige. So he's my choice. Honorable mention: PT Anderson (I still haven't seen There Will Be Blood; if it is as good as they say, maybe I'll have to dethrone Nolan - until I catch The Dark Knight ![]() |

You know what. There are so many great directors on this list, it really is hard to pick just one.
I decided to go with Nolan for two reasons. 1) Memento. He and his brother did such a good job with this film. I mean it is a phenomenal piece of work. 2) Batman Begins. Need I say more. Okay, I will. They reinvented the series better than anyone else could have. They took the cheese away, but left the chicken and it's all dark meat. mmmmmmmm. |

Disagreed. I thought it was great. However, I can see why people do not like it. It is set at grueling pace, slow and methodical. It is however a great Character study of a man. It really is one of those movies that you love or hate. Of course, I voted PT Anderson here. Im a big fan.

I have to vote for the director whose movies I come back to watch the most.
That is Shyamalan. I know it's trendy to ridicule him and to say how easy it was to catch "the twist", yet I don't think most people get his movies. The human element of each of his movies provides me with so much re-watchability....plus I love the camerawork. The cinematography has brought me back to watch Unbreakable several times. Second for me is Nolan, easy. |

Bump!
Even as early as April, nearly a third of those who voted chose Christopher Nolan. Now he is the hottest younger director in Hollywood, by far. Deservedly so, in my opinion. He's paid his dues, from his indie origins (yes, Memento had a $4.5 production budget!) to gun-for-hire with the Insomnia remake, and now has earned his wings. |

Wes Anderson, hands down. Second would be Sophia Coppola.

Sorry, Grubert, but my standards of "Cinema-critic ethics" forbid me from voting on any best director poll that includes Uwe Boll as a choice.
![]() Other than that, though, I think there are several of those choices that could go on to be considered master filmmakers if the right projects come along: Paul Thomas Anderson -- not someone everybody likes, but There Will Be Blood and Magnolia will be considered classics well into the future Darren Aronofsky -- Pi and Requiem for a Dream were amazing, but it remains to be seen if he can match that again Sam Mendes -- unbeatable at capturing the 'human condition' on film, something many other (even great) directors struggle endlessly with -- also I love his theatrical visual style Christopher Nolan -- can take a tired franchise and reboot it in a way that people can't see anyone else being at the helm -- whether that will pigeonhole him into the Michael Bay "I can only direct movies where lots of sh!t blows up" movies going forward remains to be seen Steven Soderbergh -- interesting, often-kenetic visual style that works for the MTV short-attention-span generation, and can handle a wide variety of material while making it look simple They each have their own niches, but I think those directors have the greatest likelihood of being able to cross over from masters of a genre or niche and into the mainstream (Nolan and Soderbergh already have) without cannibalizing their artistic vision. Many of the others are great directors in their own right, but either haven't been fully tested yet (Del Toro), may be past their prime (Tarentino), or just seem less likely to be able to break out of their niche (Fincher, Wes Anderson).
