Default CNN lists top 5 Blu-ray players!

http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2008/...mag/index.html

CNN has listed the top 5 Blu-ray players, their pick for number one (unsurprisingly) is the PS3.

(Notice how their web address misspells blu-ray.....)
Still, their choices are:
1 Sony PS3
2 Sony BDP-S350
3 Pioneer Elite BDP-05FD
4 Panasonic DMP-BD50
5 Samsung BD-P1500

I'm not surprised by PS3 coming out on top. I'm pretty much in agreement with that as well. The PS3's lack of infrared remote capability is arguably a non-issue. I have one of those Bluetooth remotes. You can buy a USB IR adapter if you really feel like doing such a thing. I don't.

CNN's "best players" list misses many of the newest models on the market. I think the Panasonic DMP-BD35K and DMP-BD55K are best overall out of standalone BD players in terms of performance in relation to price.

The article had a few glaring mistakes in it, such as mentioning Dolby TrueHD alone for the 7.1 output capability of PS3 (the PS3 internally decodes DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD and outputs either as LPCM). The Sony BDP-S350 doesn't internally decode the next-gen audio formats, but it can properly output their bit streams to a capable receiver.

Nice to have postitive Blu-ray articles now but I don't agree with their top 5 at all. They left 2 of the new Panny's off list and have not heard any good things about the Samsung 1500.

Wow. The PS3 is number one. I have to say I really love my PS3 (don't b!tch slap me, but I don't even have any PS3 games). I use it exclusively for BD playback. I originally purchased the Sony BDPS-300 last Thanksgiving from Best Buy for $299. It was an okay player, but it was super slow, had not internet connection and it occasionally would freeze up. The PS3 blows it away.

In all honesty the BD35 should probably be #1 or #2 with the PS3, but this is still a nice list

I have two of them, and no games....... my buddies think I've lost my mind! (of course my one buddy got his PS3 a year before I got my first one, and he STILL doesn't have a single blu-ray )

EDIT:

Looking at the list, do you think they left out the BD35 to leave more room for other players.... so they could give a nod to Pioneer, Samsung, and Panasonic in addition to Sony???? Perhaps they're playing politics with the advertisers??????

Communist News Network ..... I just don't trust them

You know I don't understand like many others here why would CNN not note the fact that. The PS3 does not match other A/V equipment and as others on this forum may say it is not the best blu ray player on the market. Now this may upset many of you but hey what can I do but sell the two I have now and get a proper Blu Ray player.

Let's have some specifics on why. A broad claim needs to be backed up with some facts.

The only "deficiency" the PS3 has compared to standalone BD players is a lack of bit streaming capability of lossless formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. The PS3 internally decodes those formats and outputs them as multichannel linear PCM instead. I'll say that's not all that much of a deficiency. The PS3 is one very powerful computing device -much more powerful than than a standalone BD player. The PS3 decodes those formats very accurately. And then if a problem turns up, that can be addressed with a firmware update. Not every standalone BD player can manage that.

The PS3 has fantastic image quality. It holds its own against most standalone models. Some reviewers have given a couple of Panasonic models a slight edge.

Nothing compares to PS3 in terms of BD disc loading speed and BD Live access times. The PS3 by far is the speed king of the bunch in that area.

Though I have to agree with most of your points, I will say that there are a few players not far behind the PS3 in terms of speed. The PS3 will, no doubt, be replaced in a short time to come by newer, faster, more powerful, and overall better players for a cheaper price tag. I guarantee it.

I'm with you on that. I've been thinking about selling my PS3 so I can get a Panasonic BD-35.
