Default black bars

i cannot believe that even with a blu ray player and a new widescreen tv, there are still black bars on the screen. IM kinda pissed cause when i went to pc richards a few months ago, the salemen told me that when you play a blu ray movie, there are no black bars. I just cannot believe that even after paying 3000 for a samsung 6 series and 400 for a ps3 i still have to deal with stupid black bars. i just dont get it. u guys hate it also im assuming

I dont think these kind of threads will EVER go away. People just assume that because their TV is a wide aspect ratio, that all movies with "black bars" are the same ratio.

He lied to you. It's based on the aspect ratio of the movie. Some movies will have them, some not and varying degrees.

Buy a Kuro. The screen is so black that you can't tell where the black bars bars end and the frame begins. Best purchase ever.

Black bars are not a problem for me. The key is seeing the movie the way it should be seen. Turn down the lights and you won't see the black bars anymore.

Actually, I DON'T accept original aspect ratio. I mean I get it if the movie is a sci-fi, or epic type movie with sweeping panoramic shots etc. But when you get drivel that really should have been straight to video or even worse 'romantic comedies' shot in a 2.35 aspect ratio it really pisses me off. Who are you trying to kid? A Scorsese you're not!

Besides, the majority of a film's gross doesn't come from the box office but from the home video market. So why the hell would you go out of your way to film in an aspect ratio that the vast majority of paying consumers' TV's cannot handle without losing a 3rd of your screen real estate!

I'm sure it won't be long before some prima-dona director decides his movie is so special that it has to be really, really wide and introduces an even wider aspect ratio - which by the time the home viewer watches it will have to hold up a magnifying glass to the screen in order to make anything out!

thats just crazy talk! look you should have done research before you bought the new tv and blu ray player. movies cost millions to make, sets cost millions to produce! the films are shot in the ratios they are so that we the movie viewer can enjoy the sets etc! If you hate it so much! take back your tv and blu ray player, and buy yourself a crt tv and dvd player for about $70 then you will be happy! there is just no pleasing some people!

What is the IQ level for this forum, because I think it is set too low given the nature and response of this thread.

For the smart challenged people.. um shut up and enjoy the movie you are watching or go live in a cave and build a fire. And watch the fire without the black bars!!!

Leave all us high IQ people alone.

If you don't dwell on the black bars, you wont notice them.

People no need to be aggressive, if he does not know about the black bars it's natural that it comes as a bad surprise for him. Besides you guys don't explain very well or refer him to obscure endless threads that in the end don't help much.

Ok man the problem could be explained in a complex and unsatisfactory way or it could be explained in a simple way so let me give you the simple one:

1 You are not missing anything in the picture which is what matters.
2 Black bars are due to the simple fact that widescreen TV's are not as wide as Cinema screens therefore a very wide movie will not cover the full screen of your less wide TV and you end up with black bars. Personally I wish they'd sell at least 2:1 HDTV's which seems like a better balanced ratio meaning that you'd have very small black bars up and down on very wide 2.40:1 movies and very small black bars on the left and right for 1.85:1 movies.
Or why not the ultimate 2.40:1 wide screen HDTV to have it exactly as in the movies which would be no black bars for very wide movies and just like in the cinema, wider black bars on the sides for less wide 1.85:1 movies.

thanks quexos lol, yeah i had no idea i wass gonna get people pissed off at me. I mean you would think that with the way technology has progressed they would have found a way to watch a movie on a tv and have no black bars thats all im saying and even at pc richards where they know alot about hi def tvs they think that there arent any black bars with a blu ray. i called up to complain about the black bars and not only did my salesmen think there shoudeltnt be any, the guy on the phone didtn think there should be black bars. but anyway i guess they're not that bad, i just feel they should find a way to watch a widescreen movie on a tv with no black bars

In before the lock!

Well, lest we beat this subject to death again - grain and black bars used to bother me (I was so young and foolish back then), but to me, movies are more of a sonic experience first, then visual - so I've come to accept bars. I love OAR. I want to see what they intended me to see!

And holy crap, did that salesman lie to you!

Or, if you will, the theater walls above and below the screen.
