Default Audio Set Up Opinions Please

Hey there,

I'm getting ready to upgrade my audio set up from a 6 year old Pioneer HTIB, and have been shopping around a bit and wanted to see what people thought of my possible set up...

Receiver: Yamaha RX-V663BL (I'm looking for something that will process HD Audio, not concerned about 1080 upconversion or number of HDMI imputs as I'm only hooking a Blu-ray and XBox 360 to it)

Center Speaker: Definitive Technology ProCenter 1000

Front and Rear Speakers: Definitive Technology ProSat 800

Sub: Definitive Technology Pro Sub 800 or 1000 (not sure yet on which to go with)

I'm in an apartment, so I'm not looking at something that will get me kicked out for shaking the neighbors' pictures off their walls... but I still want some kick! I'm mostly going to be watching movies with this set up. As for budget, I'd like to stay between $1500 and $2000.

Thanks for your help and pointers!

That's a nice budget and I'm certain a MAJOR upgrade to your former HTIB. Remember tough, you have now officially caught the bug and no matter what you do, you'll be continually upgrading on sound quality. So, be forewarned....but welcome to the club!

I can't comment too much on your proposed or intended setup, but I do have a Yamaha AVR (see sig). It does double-duty as a 2-channel system (for now) as well and I love it.

With regard to speakers I'll let our usual forum regulars provide you with an opinion on your particular choices. Bottom line....do they sound good to you? Are they within your budget? Because ultimately that is all that matters.

Congrats on your soon to be new set-up!

Mirage Omnisat v2 (x 4)

Mirage Omnisat v2 Center Channel (x 1)

Polk Audio PSW10

------------------

a nice 5.1 system that shouldn't over power the apartment while giving you excellent sound.

edit: just noticed you are looking at the definitive tech. Those would make nice speakers also. The Yamaha RX-V663 would also make a nice receiver.

With that price range, you could actually get something a little more substantial. Not that definitive technology is bad by any means. This is certainly worth looking at and they actually have better ones in the $2000. Good luck.

Here's one that I have always suggested - go out and listen to speakers for yourself ! Now with that said, here's something to listen to:
You don't want to get kicked out of your apartment, and it seems that floorstanders are out of the question, something musical with a kick as well....hmmmm?
System 1.
5 Paradigm Atom Monitors v.5 $625.00 for all five retail find a dealer - you can't buy Paradigm online
1 Martin Logan Dynamo Subwoofer 599.00 at amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FIJA6W total $1224.00 you can go 7.1 for $1474.00 still well under budget!!!! With the extra change...relieve your Yamaha of its amplification duties and buy this 7 channel power amp http://www.emotiva.com/upa7.html for 649.00 (if you go 7.1 you are only a few dollars over budget at $2123.00).

System 2.
3 PBS C1's http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=PBALC1 orient these speakers vertically ($687.00). A pair of PBS S50's ($799.00) for surrounds http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=PBIMS50
and top it off with an A-2 Elemental Design subwoofer for 315.00
http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_...roducts_id=407 (it will have more than enough "woof" for you) - total price $1801.00

I could go on all night but this is just to get you started.

Oh, and Def Techs are nice too
