Default HDMI question

Hi all,

Was just wondering if for now I can just unplug the HDMI cable from my cable box and plug that into the PS3 when I want to watch a movie or play a game? It seems like it's a no-brainer but maybe I am missing something.

It appears my Panasonic only has one HDMI input. So I'd imagine the eventual move is to get a splitter.

Thanks,
Paul

Shouldn't be a problem, though doing that long-term may end up damaging the connector or sockets. You'll also want to make the switch before you power-on the device or set. Sometimes there will be a handshake problem if you plug/unplug when things are on. Get a switch from Monoprice.

yea, the switch would do fine but IMO, it seems annoying to be switching every time..

Yeah, a switch would be reccomended.

If you want a cheaper solution, there are cables that does that good, old "2 to 1" job. Just like those pesky SCART-cables. I'd still go for the switch, tho.

To ensure a strong signal, get a POWERED switcher, which is a switcher with its own power supply.

HOWEVER, those things are around US$100 or so. You might as well splurge and get a HDMI receiver that can do the switching for you and give you HD sound for your PS3.

Your best bet is to get a better receiver. Do some research and show patience. I got my Onkyo 606 for $249 from eCost because I was patient. I read a thread recently that someone bought an Onkyo 605 for $160 on ebay.

Love my Onkyo 606 btw, does everything you could want out of a receiver under $1000.

Thanks for the help all. I think I will look into a receiver.

So an HDMI cable won't even give me HD sound for a PS3? Amazing how the extras add up!

Thanks again!

Well you're connecting your PS3 directly to your HDTV and playing it through the HDTV speakers. Of course you're not getting the full blown HD sound.

PS3->HDMI->Receiver-->HDMI->HDTV where the receiver will pump out audio via 5.1/7.1 speakers WILL give you HD surround sound.
