Not sure if OT is the right place for this or if there's a better one, but here goes:
I'm interested in installing YDL 6.0 on the PS3, as I do not like the web browser that's included and I just want a better option than what's there. Plus, I want to tinker around a little. To be clear, tinker a little - not a lot. I don't need a big huge linux distro. Hopefully someone here is running YDL right now and can answer my questions: 1 - When a DVD, BD, or PS3 game is inserted, does it take you to them immediately or do you need to exit linux to the PS3 OS in order to have the PS3 work as a BD/DVD player? The YDL docs talk about it running as an overlay to the game OS, but what I found isn't clear on what happens when applicable media is inserted. I don't want the DVD or BD to play through a player in Linux, I want it to perform as if linux wasn't installed. 2 - After YDL is installed, is there a boot-loader which will allow me to choose between YDL or the PS3 OS within a certain amount of time (say 5 - 10 seconds) rather than automatically loading into one or the other? (i.e., something simliar to the boot-loader that most dual boot PC's have after adding linux) I would also assume that if there is a boot-loader, I can set the default OS through that. Any corrections to that assumption if the boot-loader exists? 3 - If I install YDL, and decide to keep the PS3-OS as the default, can I access YDL WITHOUT making it the default OS and rebooting the PS3? Meaning--run it as a separate 'app' like a game demo, PS network, etc? The reason I'm asking, is because my intent with the PS3 is to use it PRIMARILY as a DVD/BD/PS3 game system as is factory shipped, but I want to have the ability to use linux as a secondary function. Plus, if the wife wants to put in a DVD for the kids while I'm at work--or watch one herself--she won't want to deal with holding down the power button for 5 seconds, or logging in to linux to typing some command to boot the game os inside linux. I'm really looking for simplicity, if you haven't guessed. My wife and I both love that we put in a movie, and it loads right away. Since it's replacing a stand alone BD player and my gaming is done via my 360 (but I LOVE Motorstorm and will buy other PS3 games) I don't want to lose the ease the PS3 does this with. I also don't want to keep a sportscar in the garage all summer either, if you catch my drift. So any advice/experience/etc would really be appreciated. camper |
