Default Rush: Time Stand Still (2016)

http://www.rushisaband.com/blog/2016...enings-tonight

Curious about the bonus content of the Best Buy exclusive. There's the (IMO kinda ridiculous) Gumby keychain. But what is the archival footage?

FWIW I continue to be frustrated by the band's video release packaging choices. In this instance, a BD release has been packaged in something the size of which is the same form factor as an old school 3-/4-CD "chubby" jewel case.

Rush does tend to jam alot into a small space with their releases.

Not exactly the way I'd characterize it--especially given the irony of this not being the first time there's been an issue as to what exactly the bonus content of a release is--but you get an "E" for Effort in terms of finding the silver lining.

I think the problem is likely not with the band's decisions per se but rather the folks who make packaging decisions at Rounder Records and/or ZOE Vision.

Would like to know this too. Amazon says it is region B locked.

Frig. My mistake. I just realized I played Beyond the Lighted Stage. Not Time Stand Still. Time Stand Still is for sure region a, not sure if region b though. I can check later.

Unfortunately, Amazon is sometimes just wrong on this.

ZOE Vision/Rounder Records is based in Nashville. The biggest aud for this release (no dis to Brazilian Rush fans) is North America. It doesn't make sense that they'd be handling production/distribution for a title coded exclusively for Region B (which I think is Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand).

Wow the Gumby version is quite popular if my Amazon store sales this week are any indication.

Very odd but typical Best Buy. The original SKU (5624455) is now no longer showing as available at their site. It has been replaced by a new SKU (5657422) that is not available for either shipping or in-store pickup. WTF.

Correct, there are no subtitles. Perhaps there will be a release outside North America ?

FINALLY got my copy of T.S.T., it's been on backorder at most places for some time. Deep Discount was nice though and sent it expedited (?), as it got here in only 2 business days !

It's a very good, heartfelt documentary presented by (most of) the band and its support members, but doesn't offer much that any hardcore RUSH fan wouldn't already know. And for the casual viewer, two things will stand out - 1.) Neil's (legendary) isolation, even from his fellow band members. He doesn't even appear together with his band mates, but rather is always interviewed alone. 2.) Neil's health (border-line hypochondria ?). We all get older, have physical ailments/problems, etc. But Neil's list is seemingly endless, and every one is a potential impediment to the band's future. His perfectionism and unwillingness to even dial it (his playing) back 1% largely contributed to this quandary.

I've followed this band since they first hit the U.S. ... heck the Midwest and esp. Ohio helped "put them over". Fond memories of intimate little shows at the Agora Ballroom (Cleverland and Columbus) and such. So, it is not without hesitation that I say "You know what, screw Neil Peart, there ARE other drummers out there that could do the job." Granted, that list is very short, but Terry Bozzio and Vinnie Colaiuta could fill those shoes. Of course, that ain't gonna happen ...

Re ". . . screw Neil . . ."

Really, dude?

Also "convenient" that you don't mention Alex' arthritis as being a factor in the mix.

Yes, really. Not the man per se but the notion that he is so superior to every other drummer that he is impossibly irreplaceable.

And both potential replacements that I mentioned would be totally capable of the task. Are you aware of either of them ? No coincidence the list of musicians they have both backed has common denominators of Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, etc. = both are consummate musicians /drummers just like Neil.

Quite simply because it was not the definitive reason. Alex would continue on, best he could, at least for a while. He didn't decline to extend the R40 tour. He is not the OCD perfectionist that refuses to continue because his playing in the future might not be 100% of what it used to be. Muddy Waters performed until his dying day, and Neil doesn't have 10% of the ailments Muddy soldiered through. The Stones (love 'em or hate 'em) are still performing at a very high level in their sixth decade. The list goes on and on.

Your notion that Neil feels he is "is so superior to every other drummer that he is impossibly irreplaceable" is exactly that: Yours. There's prima facie evidence to the contrary not just in the film but in especially the past 10 years or so of Rush history. Specifically, Alex and Ged have said that they would not continue without him. This is not a perspective that Neil is imposing on his bandmates. It's about a sense of respect for the band as a unit in which each member plays a fundamentally constitutive part. Frankly it's so basic IMO to what makes Rush special--and the spirit of this documentary--that it's all the more unfortunate that your passions are seemingly contributing to a demonizing of Neil over an idea that's just not accurate.

And my awareness of and fondness for Terry, Vinnie or any other drummer is irrelevant to the foregoing more basic point. I love Matt Cameron's playing on My Favorite Headache. That doesn't mean that, had Alex joined those sessions, it would have been a Rush album.

Not specifically responding to your post, but more in general. Firstly, I absolutely love Rush and have since their inception. Seen every tour they've had and in many cities.
With that said....Neil isn't even close being being a superior drummer to a lot of guys out there. Mike Mangini and/or Mike Portnoy can play circles around him. And I'm as HUUUUUUUGE of a Rush head as anyone out there. I too saw Rush at the Cleveland Agorha back in the 70's as that's where I lived and grew up at. Ive been listening to them since they first spun them on WMMS in Cleveland while I was in high school. Neil's a very good drummer but nowhere close to being the best.... not even close.
Nevertheless, one of the greatest bands and nicest guys of all time.

Mike Portnoy is a great drummer but he cannot "play circles" around Neil. That's a bit silly. However, whether or not Neil is the greatest rock drummer alive has nothing to do with him being replaceable, as Geddy and Alex clearly believe he is not. I think their commitment to him is commendable.

By mistake actually. Wanted to reply to Midnight Rambler and thought I did. Wrote the entire post on phone (except for first sentence or 2) and didn't want to rewrite.

Since I'm responding again, I'll put in my 2 cents.
Rush wouldn't be Rush without Neil, Geddy or Alex. Rush is the sum of all it's parts. They may not be the greatest musicians on the planet, but together, they're like "one" of the greatest musicians on the planet. If any member decided it was time to hang it up, it's over. Not only are they a great band, but they're best friends. There is no Rush without any of them.
This is a band where if someone left, I couldn't imagine anyone else replacing one of them. They're just that unique.
