Default Home improvement question

I need to find some sort of solution for my sliding glass door. It's a standard sliding door, two doors wide. I currently have vertical blinds that I've had for four years. My problem is, I have three dogs and two cats that wreak havoc upon my blinds. I've had three louvres where the piece above the slot that holds the louvre into the clip break, and I've either lost the pieces or they're just not repairable anymore.

So, I'm looking for something that may work better for my situation. The blinds are closed 90% of the time. I need something that will block the most amount of sunlight and will also hold up to daily abuse by pets. Also, it needs to be made of a material that is easy to clean from dogs/cats rubbing on them, so no fabrics. The blinds I have are a PVC material, which works great, so something like that is optimal. Any opinions are welcome!

You could buy two sets of black-out curtains, that way you'd always have a clean one up. If that's not an option, you could contact the maker of the blinds and order a handful of those clips. I recently had to order 3 of the plastic pieces on the end of the rod that you use to open and close the blinds with. If I remember they were pretty cheap, like 50c apiece.

It was a never-ending problem for me with my two cats. They love to wrestle with one another in the sun, and the sliding glass door area is perfect for them.

I put in a double-rod with the patterned sheer drapes closest to the window. The rod away has heavy black-out curtains. They've been very easy to keep clean.

Pella (and I think Anderson) makes sliding glass doors with the blind between the glass. Nothing is easier to clean than glass, and animals have no strings to play with.

Link: http://web.pella.com/products/doors/...etailpage.aspx

If that doesn't work, look for Sliding Patio Door, Designer Series.

Not the cheapest solution, but we're in a "similar" situation...... but we don't have pets (god I'd love to get a Vizsla though....)

anyways......

in the pictures I've posted previously, the "new t.v. room" has a sliding glass door off the back of the house to a deck/gazebo area...... well, the part you can't tell from the pictures is that since the house was made handicap accessible for the new addition, the sliding glass door was installed backwards.... so it opens with the sliding part on the outside (where it'd normally be on the inside)

That in itself isn't a big deal, but we figured a sliding glass door wasn't for us anyways.... just personal preference I guess.....

OUR solution is (when funds allow, as we have a lot going on) to replace the door completely with French-Doors......

If you go with French doors, you only need small vertical blinds at the top, because you can get french doors that have windows only at the top (if you so choose, but we're getting full-glass french doors with the little window-box designs probably)

good luck..... I'm learning quickly that home improvement is like home-theater.....

You're NEVER done
