Question Surround and back speaker hight

How how high should the surround and back speakers be positioned? Ear level or higher?

Ideally you want them at, or just above ear level. Mine are sitting about 1 foot above ear level but are able to be angled downwards enough that I could aim them directly at the average ear position. If you have plenty of maneouverability with the angle, they can go anywhere so long as they can be aimed properly.

That's if your surround speakers are direct radiating (like your M-1's). If you have Bipolar or Dipole speakers they should be much higher that ear level - Bipole's and Dipoles place a null at the ears (not level with the ears-the nulls just face the ears) and radiate towards the front and rear of a room. When I was working in the business - surrounds where placed on the side walls about 6 feet high. Petra is right for direct radiating speakers but for Bi and Di you want'em high.

I always thought standing ear level for surrounds was a good rule of thumb for direct radiating speakers. Seems to be just about right in most cases.
