Default Onkyo vs. Yamaha Receiver

Hey guys just wanted to get your opinions on 2 current receivers. The Onkyo 805 vs. Yamaha RX-V1800. Both have newer versions out so they both dropped in price alot. Thing is I just bought the 805 but I'm still in the return period so I'm questioning what I should do. I have always thought Yamaha made better receivers but the 1800 was always out of my price range until now.

Comparable facts about each:
Onkyo has Burr Brown DAC's the Yamaha doesn't
Onkyo is THX Ultra 2 certified the Yamaha isn't

The Yamaha has 1080p upconversion the Onkyo doesn't
The Yamaha has 4 HDMI inputs the Onkyo has 3

Also the Yamaha weighs 37lbs compared to the Onkyo weighing 50lbs.

Both have HD-Audio and I have Klipsch Icon speakers so sound quality is definitely noticable.

Thanks for your guys opinions

Doesn't matter what anyone elses opinion is, you're the one who has to listen to it. If you like the Onkyo keep it, if not, return it.

In the most polite way...this is not like speakers where you buy what sounds good to you. This is a matter of a receiver that could be better than one or another due to the technology thats inside. Trust me I did my research on both I would just like to hear what people have to say about them from personal experience. I've only had the 805 for 3 weeks and have no clue what the Yamaha sounds like. But thank you for responding.

I know right. I bought the 805 online so if I return it I need to know that the receiver I purchase is significantly better than the 805 if that makes sense. But in my opinion I think the 805 is the best one due to its THX certification, Burr Brown DAC's, and probably its weight difference. But maybe someone else knows more about the Yamaha and or Pioneer.

I bought it from www.vanns.com I purchased the 805 and my Klipsch Icon speakers at the same time as sort of a whole new home theater package for myself. It can be found for about 100-150 bucks less though on some websites (if still available) but they were refurbished units. Plus I trusted Vanns. Their return policy, price, no sales tax, and free shipping sealed the deal for me.

The Pioneer 94 is 41lbs and doesn't have Burr Brown DAC's which i've heard are super good. I honestly don't know if those two things mean anything but it sure seems like something to me haha

It's exactly like buying speakers, buy what sounds good to you, in the limited range you're looking at there will not be much of a difference.

The only thing you're going to get from a thread like this is 10 people saying Onkyo is better than Yamaha, 10 more people saying Yamaha is better than Onkyo and 1 guy saying .. go with Brand X !!

and i think the onkyo 805 cant compare the elite 94! why?
elite 94: 4 hdmi, 140 wats, sexy look, weighs less, and pluss its an elite!
in my local magnolia home theater they have discontinued the elite 94's but they still have a opened box elite 94, would you buy it?

I would spend more or consider other options if they are laid out. And 10 people saying this and 10 people saying that is exactly what I'm looking for. The whole purpose of me creating this thread was to get people saying Onkyo or Yamaha is better. That way they can name things about each that I may not know about or different selling points to each.

To me I would honestly put them on the same page. I know Elite is Pioneers top of the line stuff but I think the Onkyo 805 (806) 875 (876) and 905 (906) are Onkyo's top of the line stuff.

If the extra HDMI port, extra 10 watts per channel, and its look are important to you then I'd say go for it. And yes I've heard a bunch of people say good things about 6th avenue. As for Magnolia if its a good price and thats what you want then do it.

I'm not gonna sit here and tell you Onkyo is better. This is exactly why I posted this thread for people to throw out other suggestions or their opinions on these receivers. Some people just don't understand that some of us like to here people's opinions and why they think something is better than the other. Let me know what you choose.

Man so many things are going through my mind right now haha. I was set with my Onkyo until I saw the price of the 1800 today. I always do this...I buy something but then a few weeks later question my purchase and want to upgrade or try something else. How much may I ask are you finding the 94 for?

Dang, ya thats a steal. If I saw that at my local best buy i'd jump on it. I'd return my Onkyo for the 94 if I could get the 94 for $650. An $1800 receiver for $650 thats a steal. I only wish I could get the Onkyo 905 or Yamaha RX-V3800 for that much.

I think I'm just going to be happy with what I have for now. Besides Im trying to save up for the Pioneer BDP05FD blu-ray player

yes id say so. Because it still has best buys 30 day return policy, manufacturers warranty, and if it looks like its in brand new condition then go for it. It's up to you but to me it sounds like a good deal.

I haven’t owned a Yamaha product for a while, but as I recall what I liked about it was it had a certain “warmth” to the sound, especially in music reproduction. The surround effects were also done quite well. Onkyo (which I now own) to me sounds a bit more analytical. Does a good job with the surround modes, but I have a feeling is geared more towards the role of home theater than 2 channel music, and in that role it does quite well. As far as THX certification, that just means the amplifier has been shown to be able to crank out X number of amps (current) at a given moment. With the Klipsch speakers you have, and as efficient as they are, I would say that should be less of a concern. In fact, I would say - IMO – mating the metal speakers & horn tweeters of your speakers with a warm receiver like the Yamaha might make for a better match than the Onkyo.

The Onkyo 805 has 3 HDMI inputs (one whole HDMI input less) and the Pioneer has about 10 watts more than the 805 (which doesn't include inflation of ratings), the 805 has Burr-Brown DAC's (Pioneer doesn't), the 805 has a beefier power supply so it isn't going to crap out (hence the extra weight), the weight of the 805 compared to the Pioneer is irrelivant, Elite is a marketing thing (although there are nice Elite products Pioneer makes), and personally I think the 805 looks better than the Pioneer, but of course that's my opinion. You can also get the 805 for less than the Elite so I think the 805 is the right choice.
