Default Anyone here ever been a bouncer?

I just started university ( Im almost 20) and I am seriously considering bouncing. I have no classes Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun and I really am tired of working in retail. I figure it would be some crazy life experience. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience doing it.

I figure I am the right look for it; I am 6'4 255 and ive been boxing, doing muay thai and grappling for the last four years. Not to mention I can cross my arms and look real mean.

I been in the same place. I've been doing Karate for over 12 years, Brazillian Jui jitsui, Muay Thai and Tae Kwon Do (sorry ). Done the bouncing, it can be fun for a while and might be good for a college job, but I would ONLY consider it as a college job. After a while it can be very draining. Also when you have a wife to come home to and some random jerk pulls out a gun it's soooooo not worth it. So while it can be fun for a while and you might be able to do it (though most places won't hire you unless you're 21) I'd seriously consider ALL the consequences both good and bad (besides the cash) to see whether it's right for you. Both myself and my instructor got out of bouncing after a few years for the above reasons I listed.

The best bouncer never has to ever touch a patron, remember that. I've defused a bunch of possible problems just talking to them while managing to walk them out the door. I halfass bounced for a year, and I was lucky as there was never a MAJOR problem. Just the usual drunken people that didn't realize it was time to go. Long term, I would hate it, it is good for maybe a year or so, after that you get burnt out having to deal with the worst of the worst. It's even worse when you are at a strip club doing it, and then you see everything that you really never wanted to see or know.

My brother has been a bouncer for quite a few years now. It helps him get women, if that matters.

And try to get a job at a strip club. They pay much better than at a standard bar or club.

Depends were you will be bouncing at, if it's a downtown type bar in a less then stellar area i would say is 10-12 an hour and free beer sound worth it to break up fights and have the occasional nut job pull a knife and maybe it get even worse then that?

My friend bounced in my downtown area had a gun pulled on him twice and a knife many times even getting stabbed once. Of course my area sucks and has been invaded by low life welfare scum over the last decade, i dont even bother going downtown anymore here as every other night someone is getting shot up, it is very different these days from even just 10 years ago when i was your age.

I have... It is fun. Free ass every night (you get off of work the same time that the last call girls are being kicked out...guess what they are looking for).

Also, I was never in a situation where I was dealing with anyone alone. We had a policy to just force people out the back door, so normally any tussle was just thrown outside (I hear it can get hairy when a group of people want to brawl WITH the security).

Our club never had a shooting, but was known as the place people fought. I got a couple black eyes, but nothing big. The club across the street had a shooting every other week it seemed.

BTW, being a fighter does not help. Being good, or even half way competent, with BJJ is all you need... normally you catch people from behind anyway, so you have the upper hand almost every time.

it is a QUICK way to make friends, because so many people will suck up to you... we could let friends in with no cover, we could give free drinks to regulars who helped out (thats how I started)...

When I did it I was 5'11 and 195lbs. I was alright size, but hardly intimidating.

I didn't think being a fighter would help I just figured it would maybe help get a job. I wouldn't expect to end up fist fighting with a patron while 5 other bouncers do nothing. I think I may try for the strip club.

A good friend of mine and a old co-worker is a bouncer. He is only 5'7" and fairly small, but he is quick and pretty strong. He loves it. He has the occasional nut job thats expected but nothing too bad so far.

Where are you considering bouncing?

If it's a Top 40 club or a Hip Hop club in Toronto, I'd suggest not.

My father-in-law (who just passed away ay 97) was a re-tired fire Chief out of San Pedro fire-boats but before that he was a bouncer in bars along the coast. He must have really like it because he has told me so many stories about what happened and he loved telling them

Just remember to always be nice until it's time to not be nice anymore.

You take your cues from Dalton, the best cooler in the business.

If I got paid like him, I would be a bouncer. Didn't he make something like $500 a night?
