Default upscale video to HD

I have an Onkyo 706 amp, and I am wondering if there is a way to hook up my HD sattelight receiver so the Onkyo will upscale the sd channels to HD. Or would the picture be so bad that its not worth it.

If your satellite box is anything like mine; you can run the HDMI to one input on your 706, then plug the S-video & RCA audio into another input on your 706. I have NO idea whether or not the upscaling would markedly improve the picture quality of the SD channels; but I do know this will work because I have my DirecTV box hooked to my Onkyo 606 with HDMI output on my sat box, and to the tuner card on my PC with the s-video and RCA audio outs on my sat box.

If it improves your picture quality, you would just have to select the appropriate input on your 706 for whether you are watching HD or SD. Try it and let us know how it works.

Depending on your setup and provider your sd channels are probably already being upconverted to hd. Dishnet will only output either 720 or 1080 no passthrough so everything output by a HD dishnet box is upscaled if it is not already hd(Not sure about DirectTV). Your tv(if HD) is upscaling everything that it displays if it is a signal other than the native resolution of the panel. If your TV is 1080i/p then everything it displays is scaled to 1080.

To make a long story short, your sd satellite channels are probably as good as they are going to get.
