The last couple of times I've been in Wal-Mart and have seen a 3-movie pack that includes Superman/Superman II/Superman Returns for $9.00. My question is, is it worth it? Or should I just hold off and get the Superman Anthology which also includes Superman III and IV. My dilemma is because I can't see to find III and IV on Blu-Ray by themselves anywhere.

You, by chance, wouldn't have those movies to say whether III and IV are worth it on Blu-Ray, would you? |

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-S...3/#Screenshots I haven't watched the Blu-rays, so I don't really have a personal opinion about them. I don't like what Bryan Singer did with shoehorning Superman Returns into the old chronology, though. |

The current one. Warner will not substantially be re-visiting the prior Superman movies on Blu-ray before the next format comes out, except to possibly issue the existing discs in a box with Man Of Steel at the end of 2013.

I doubt they would do that. Isn't 'Man of Steel' an overall reboot? It wouldn't make sense with the old movies if that's the case.

Whether it's definitive or not is up to the eye of the beholder. The 3 pack only gives you the Donner Cut though, while the theatrical cut is only available in the anthology set.

Everyone's talking about the theatrical cut of Superman II, but there is also the theatrical cut of Superman: The Movie, exclusive to this set, as well as a slightly new disc of Superman Returns, which sadly contains the same transfer but adds an alternate opening to the special features.

Yeah, I went with the Superman Anthology for the theatrical cuts of 1 & 2, and the Return to Krypton scene.
The Richard Donner cut of II is interesting, but it feels more like a "what if?" than a true movie. While I'm sure it cost Warner a lot, it doesn't feel like it was completed with the love or care that was given to Blade Runner. So it feels like a bunch of odds and ends. The new digital effects are terrible and the modern stock footage doesn't fit the 70s/80s look of the film. And recycling the ending of the first movie is rather lame (even if it was there in the original script). The only real benefit is the material Donner actually shot and was deleted (Brando, more Hackman). |

I want stand-alone Blu-rays for Superman: The Movie and the theatrical version of Superman II. I am holding out for new editions of these closer to the release of Man of Steel this summer, but I may grab the current stand-alone of Superman: The Movie, because it has the version that I prefer.
I have a propensity to avoid "dead weight" in my collection. This is why I do not want III, IV, or Superman Returns, and am passing up on the anthology. |
