I just heard VC-1 will be part of the standard.
Why was it chosen when there are already better codecs on the market? From my personal test (with MV9) I can say that ON2's VP6.2 already has a much better picture detail and sharpness than Microsofts codec. Unless VC-1 is much better then the Media 9 codec, I can see no reason why to use it as a standard. Does anyone know why VC1 was chosen and why other technically superior codecs lost? Even the open source codec Xvid beats the microsoft codec in quality ! |

They didn't only add Microsoft's VC-1 codec, they also added MPEG-4 AVC High Profile to the BD-ROM specification. Their decision is probably based on a combination of video quality and good licensing terms for the codec(s).
XviD is just an implementation based on the MPEG-4 standard. On2 is proprietary and probably doesn't have as good licensing terms. |
