I don't own a receiver yet, so having trouble hooking up a bunch of things (PS3, 360..etc) to my 5.1 speakers. I realized my HDTV accepts a optical cable connection for audio output. So right now, my systems are connected to HDTV through HDMI and sound is playing through optical cable output from HDTV.
Now here's the question. When I insert optical cable directly to my console, it says sound is Dolby Digital. When I use HDTV output, it says "PLII Movie" with a Dolby Digital sign next to it. Is that the same thing? Sound is fine though. I hear it from all 5 speakers accurately, but got a feeling that direct connection to console is better. Can anyone suggest me what to do? |

If it says dolby digital, it is dolby digital. It it says PLII movie that means your receiver is taking a 2 channel signal and converting/processing it into 5 channel audio. It is not the same thing. The dolby digital sign next to the pro logic is letting you know what digital processor is being used.
What do you have everything running through? |

Most tv's are not capable of passing Dolby Digital that has been input to the tv via HDMI out through the optical. Only television that has been broadcast over air will send DD out the optical. This is not a physical limitation, but rather due to the facts that many tv manufacturers do not pay Dolby licensing.

Theres really no use of having an optical input on a TV at all. its not like its going to give you all the best of sound through 2 tiny speakers. Just hook it up directly to the receiver.
