Default WiiFit said I'm Overweight :(

OK, ever since I stopped smoking 4 months ago I've begun eating more. I have gained about 15 pounds since then. My wife and I just got WiiFit and it basically called me overweight and borderline obese. I'm 5'3" and 160lbs.

So knowing that, what are your recommendations to lose weight? Is a gym membership worth it(they offer discounted 24hr. Fitness through my work)? Should I just get up excercise on my own? Do I need to change my diet(being Filipino I eat alot of rice)?

I'm open to all suggestions.

I got 3 years at 24 HR Fitness for $475 or some ridiculous price right around Christmas. My renewal fee after that is only $29.95/yr. It is a good deal, and the ones near me do a good job of maintaining the equipment.

I just started going to the gym vigorously. I play squash 2-3 / week and go to the gym 3 days a week. Monday-wednesday-friday gym , tuesday-thursday squash. The important thing is to find an activity that you enjoy doing already because if you hate doing it than you won't succeed.

I go to the YMCA and i signed up for a personal trainer. It cost me 37/hour which really isn't bad when my buddy two blocks away costs him 60 bucks for 1/2 hour. I don't plan on doing personal trainer forever but it's a great way to get information on what to do and what not do. The most important thing to do is circuit training which is really high intensity for a short period of time. Basically your doing so much so fast that your body doesn't know what's going on and it's working harder and harder to catch up so that means that even when your leaving the gym or sitting on the couch your still burning calories.

If you want a really good book , buy the Abs diet written by one of the authors of men's health. Goes into a lot of what I just mentioned as well as give you countless amounts of exercises ( with pictures and complete instructions) as well as the best food and what to eat and not to eat. It's really not a diet as they mention, your just trying to watch what you eat and exercise hard.

As long as your eating right and exercising hard, there's no reason not to lose the weight. If your drink soda, stop.... NOW So far i've lost about 10lbs since the beginning of October. I'm almost 6"2 , 230lbs. My goal is to get to 200 by Christmas. Good luck , and don't hesitate to PM me if you need moral support

Well, my wife wants to buy an elliptical so if we do that then I don't think I'm going to join a gym.

Yeah the wii fit is a bit brutal, and messes with your head. It keeps asking my wife how I look and if I'm getting enough sleep for cripes sake.

I've always thought gym memberships were overpriced and a hassle. You wind up going 3 times and paying month after month thinking you're going to get back in there. I personally have never done this but I know plenty of people who have. I suppose it just depends on whether or not you're motivated enough to get out and do it.

Assuming you're eating white / glutinous rice, yes by all means cut way back on that. You should switch to steamed brown rice. Each plenty of fresh veggies and fruits, look carefully at the labels of any packaged products for "sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup" etc. There is too much damn sugar in everything now. I've got to where I only purchase one or two types of whole grain bread because the majority of the "whole wheat" or "healthy" bread on the market shelves list sugar as their second ingredient!!

Obviously cut out the desserts, but give yourself one day a week when you eat whatever you like (within reason).

3 ~ 4 days of cardio for 1/2 hour a week is good to start. Throw in some light resistance exercise and after a month or so up the cardio to 45 min. Don't go too much over that.

The USDA recommends 30 mins of exercise daily to maintain your weight.

This website has a lot of useful stuff.
http://www.mypyramid.gov/

Rice isn't a problem as long as it is consumed in moderation (as with everything). Try eating about 2.5 cups a day, which is the recommendation of mypyramid for a 2400 calorie diet. I known a lot of very fit filipina women and they eat a lot of white rice.

And I strongly suggest paying for a gym membership. The more expensive the better, because that alone can motivate you to go (don't think of sunk costs). Plus it's great for networking.

Then once you're at the gym, there's nothing else to do but work out. Compared to all the distractions at home if you just get a treadmill.

well, that's one thing i like about the military. we work out (a minimum) 3 times a week. keeps me in shape. also free access to the on base gyms isn't half bad either.

You need to change your daily diet and excercise habits.

Listen to my advice because I've been both physically fit and incredibly obese in my life time (i'm only 23 years old, i've put my body through HELL). Back in high school i used to weigh roughly 150lbs and was PURE MUSCLE (benched 260 EASY) I would follow a very meticulous work out regiment followed by a very carefull diet. Toward the twilight years of high school i started eating out everday (mcdonalds ,taco bell, went out to eat all the time, ate a TON of food at home ice cream ect ect) and stopped working out completely. I ended up gaining nearly 140lbs ( i still think my max weight was 300 but the most i scaled myself at was 290). I got completely fed up with the way i was looking and decided to fix it. I started eating almost nothing at yes that does help but is VERY bad for you. I ended up getting my weight down to around 160 again but was still very flabby. I would suggest NOT going this route at all. I than decided well i lost the weight it's time to kick smoking since my baby had born and i didn't want her around that at all! well i did this and than BAM gained 60lbs RIGHT back. Very disheartening. I started to diet again but was hungry all the time it was sickening. I took a lifelong wellness class (it's a part of my ciriculum to graduate from college) and i learned about all these great things about muscle memory and how to properly diet; I learned A LOT from this class and has impacted my life big time. I'm back down to 170 and i work out pretty often gaining a lot of my muslce back but i'm still not even close to what i once was. Now that i've given you my sob story i'll give you what you really are reading this for, advice

Eat 5-6 small meals a day totaling around 1500-2000 calories. This will keep your metabolism up and keep you full. Make sure you eat breakfeast everyday, that is the MOST essential meal you'll have all day, it will jump start your metabolism. If you are working out (like usuing your wiifit 3-5 days/week) you should be consuming the following; 20-30% of your diet should be protein (IMO the most essential, you need to build a little bit of muscle to help get rid of that fat); 60-70% should be carbs; and your fat should be at most 10%. BE SURE to eat low sugar low salt low fat. I watch all of those INCREDIBLY closely.

If you arn't usuing your wiifit for excersie than you should do the following excersises; WALK WALK WALK for at least 20 minutes 3-5 days/ week. Your body hits your maximum metabolism after 20 minutes of cardio workout, any more time devoted is always very good; Start doing push ups/crunchs/weight lifting. Go get a couple of 10lb weights and 20lbs weights, there's a endless amount of workouts you can do with just those two weight sizes. STRETCH AT LEAST 5 days a week. This will help you keep injury down and you will see your flexibility go through the roof.

BUT MOST OF ALL DONT EVER SMOKE ANOTHER CIGARETTE EVER AGAIN. you've taken the first and best part of maintaining a healthy lifestlye for the rest of your life. DON'T EVER give in again.

Rant done, sorry for the longest post ever.

This was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I was so mean to my wife, then fiance, the first two months after I quit. It's not hard anymore.
