Default 1.43:1 (IMAX) and 1.78:1 (16:9)

Hi there,

Just thought I'd ask if the changing aspect ratio's on the Dark Knight BD release will allow me to see everything that was on the IMAX screen when the AR shifts to 1:78:1?

Would there be any cropping from 1:44:1 to fit into a 1:78:1 image?

Actually, oddly enough, it seemed that it was cropped for IMAX. In the IMAX prologue on Batman Begins, you can see on the left side the camera helicopter's reflection. When you actually see it on the IMAX screen, I am about 99% sure it's cut off. So I am thinking it was filmed 1.78:1, then cropped to 1.44:1 for IMAX use. But I could be wrong.

Or maybe they could just separate the IMAX scenes as extras only and leave the feature presenation in 1 size. Easy fix.

I read somewhere that watching the film with IMAX sequences are a play option at the menu. It makes scence because i don't think that they would force shifting aspect ratios on us.

No thanx, I am 100% for the aspect ratio shift. There are actually quite a few movies with the shift though. Enchanted was a recent one. Except they windowboxed it (is that what it's actually called?) and then expanded it to 2.35:1.

I also didn't notice it was 1.71:1 on the Batman Begins disc because my set does a 2.5% overscan.

Putting on and then removing the black bars is ridiculous. Just keep the IMAX scenes as extras.

They will do the 1:78:1 for the IMAX shots and belive me if this doesn't get best video editing I would love to see what beats it.

The IMAX is not a gimmick in this movie it adds a real sence of thought that went into every shot. Christopher Nolan 's.

It was filmed with the intent that it would fill an IMAX screen. Some screens are scope, so naturally the IMAX footage has to be edited for those screens. Now on Blu-Ray, we'll see the version Nolan intended. They're not extra's, so they shouldn't be a seperate feature. It's part of the film, therefor it should be in the film.

So to answer my original question will you be able to see everything in a 1:78 shot that you could in a 1:44 shot?

I think Christopher Nolan said a while back that some of the image would be cropped.

I think the IMAX scenes will be pillarboxed if they maintain the 1:44:1. Or if they open up to it's original 1.71:1 ratio it will almost fill up the 1.78:1 TV (like the prologue in Batman Begins").

The normal scenes will be letterboxed for the 2.35:1 ratio to avoid cropping (those scenes were shot anamorphically and were cropped for IMAX screens).

But yeah, if they want, they could do branching technique for us to watch with the IMAX scenes or normal ones, just like "Close Encounters" and "I Am Legend".

Thanks for that, my bad. I didn't see it on IMAX. I thought they cropped like they did with Star Wars Episode II.

When I saw it (in the UK), I'm 99% certain that the 2:35:1 parts were cropped to 1:78:1. Only the bottom of the screen was blank - the top of the screen was always filled.

More like it would ruin it than fix it.

Weird! Where I saw it (here in the U.S.) they just kind of centered the non-IMAX image if I remember correctly. But I am still pretty sure it was 2.35:1.
