Default Can PS3 read a data BD disc?

Can the PS3 read data, like MP3s etc... off of a BD disc, or will it only see it as a movie/game disc?

I haven't tried it but I'm guessing it would. Data is data.

Just verified. Put in a 25GB BD-RE and the PS3 read it as a data disc no problem. Sweet. That means I can almost double the storage space on my drive with a 50GB disc

But...
the PS3 isn't reading my 50GB disc. Works fine in Windows, as the 25GB did but the PS3 doesn't recognize it. Totally strange. Anyone know of the limitations of the PS3 to recognize certain types of BD data discs?

Maybe you made a coaster?

If the PS3 can read 50GB Movies, It MUST read the 50GB data.

PS3 can read data discs (CD, DVD, or Blu-ray) and play any compatible files on them, such as AVI movie files, MP3s, pictures, and more. They can also be used to transport save files.

What do you mean by doesn't recognize it?

If you are looking for a movie, for example, it has to be in a specific directory for the PS3 to see it. I don't see any reason why this would not remain true reading a burned-BD.

Not necessarily true.

My 25GB data BD works perfectly, all mp4s in the root directory. PS3 see the disc, reads it, sees the video files and plays them.

A 50GB data BD formatted the same way with same kind of files, it not read at all by the PS3, i.e. doesn't show up when inserted, like the 25GB. So something weird is going on.

Again, the 50GB disc works fine in Windows Vista, so there isn't anything inherently wrong with the disc or the data.

That's completely irrelevant to what I said.

He more than likely just made a coaster.

Its not a coaster, it works in my computer with a BD drive just fine. All the data is available and just fine. It just can't be read for some reason in the PS3.

Perhaps the PS3 cannot read dual-layer "burnt" discs? I know I had a dvd player that wouldn't read DL DVDs that I created with my dvd burner.

Very true, Windows tends to be a bit more forgiving with lax rules set on burnt DVDs/BDs. Burned a couple of DVDs (single layer and double layer) that wouldn't play on my standalone DVD player or PS3, but Windows could read them just fine.

To the OP: What software/hardware did you use to burn your 50GB and what brand media was it? And also, is the firmware for your burner up-to-date?

are you sure you finalized the burnt blu-ray? the original windows machine would be able to read it, but other machines would not.

Yep because it cannot be written to any more, disc is closed. I had thought about that too. What's weird is that I did everything the same as with the 25GB disc. Both are Sony originals, so high quality.

I think I'll just stick with the 25GB discs for now since you can get those for like $13 but the 50GB are $40+.
