Default The current economic situation and its impact on Blu-ray

Could the current economic woes cause those people who wanted to buy Blu decide not to and what impact could that have? I keep hearing that retail stores are all but empty. I really hope this doesnt hurt Blu-Ray, but I am fearful that it could have an enormous impact.

On the bright side, maybe it would cause the prices to fall. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I for one have had to reassess which Blus I am really going to buy. It's not as much as before. I trimmed my list of Must Haves from 15 to about 6 or 7.

There have been reports to the contrary. They've been saying that since people are traveling less, they are spending more on home entertainment.

It's possible, but I just had 2 friends buy Blu Ray Players over the last few weeks but they have said they will be choosy with Blus for economic reasons.

personally I have not stopped buying but i also have paired down my list of must haves to 'def must have' and 'will have to wait'. My job just gave us the gloom and doom report of no yearly bonus this year that usually pays for my summer vacation.

So I can get every blu I want or save some cash and still take that vacation in August. I gotta get some beach time so some Blus will have to wait

I stopped buying everything else.

Blu is my one indulgence at least until Little Big Planet comes out.

But yeah...guitar gear has come to a screaching hault and I'm not upgrading my computer either.

Man...I DO need a good winter coat though

agh I feel your pain. A new Jackson guitar and more tattoo work is now dunzo until further notice and those were def on my 'to do' list within the next few months. Nothing more sad than a Koi with no color

Hasn't stopped me, I slowed down on buying BD's because I am trying to save money, and buying 5 to 10 BD's per week wasn't helping, lol.

To be honest, I don't think the economic downturn will affect BD sales that much. I mean gas prices have gone down, for now "fingers crossed" so now people have a little more money for entertainment.

Well that's my 2 cents worth.

I believe the economy will slow down Blu adoption.

At the risk of sounding pious, I think there are much more important victims of the current economic situation to worry about than the Blu-ray format. That being said, I think the far-reaching effects on Blu-ray and many other retail sectors remains to be seen, but the potential for damage is certainly there.

I'm also being frugal given the severe economic slump.

I've actually started buying more. The only things i buy are either blu-rays and video games and as of late video games just arn't as tentalizing as what they once were.

I was sooo jazzed the other day b/c I was headin out to buy Iron Man on Blu, but my wife asked me to wait until our bills were paid to see how much was left for carry over. That was a first! I know it's going to be hard b/c there are so many I want to have. I have had to move my Godfather purchse until Christmas instead of getting it when it came out. I really want the Blu format to succeed b/c I think it is vastly superior to anything that is out there or ever will be out.

Damn you Fannie and Freddie Mac!

I wonder if Toshiba and their HD DVD had something to do with it. LOL!!!!

have you thought about gluing/stapling your blu ray covers together to make said winter coat? it would make a statement, keep you warm(er), and people would know you are down with the blu

Traditionally speaking bad economic times is good for entertainment.

Some of the reasons
-Like o given above, save the money on something more expensive (like a trip) and use it for something that is cheaper and brings enjoyment now (a movie)
- An other is that what do you do, look at the gloomy face of the guy beside you, watch TV and be interrupted every few minutes to be told that your savings are disappearing? Or escape watching a movie (like Iron man where the good guy wins)
- Put your savings in the bank and watch them diminish or spend some of that money you would lose on your investment and enjoy it, instead of it just disappearing

It all depends on exactly how it will end up, but my guess is that there is a better chance that it will help BD then hurt it.

Its definitely going to hurt hd adoption, which in turn will lower expectations for hd accessories like blu-ray.

This is true. Many ppl will stay home more now and watch movies instead of travelling, going to the theatre...etc.

I won't be buying anything unnecessary right now with the current economic times. I'll be hoarding all the money I can for an emergency fund given the fact that I am a Wachovia, I mean Citi, I mean Wells, errr Wachovia employee.

I can't imagine with people staying at home that the cost of a luxury item like blu-ray will increase peoples spending on those items.
