Default I need help!

I bought a new PC about 6 months ago and it is awesome. I bought it for the 500gb hard drive, the size (it's a portable PC. I think that's what they call it.), BD/HD combo drive (HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW GGC-H20L SCSI CdRom Device, to be exact), but the thing that gets me angry is that the drive disappears. I pop a disc in and it doesn't read it, I look at my drivers it's not there. I look at a device manager and it's there but an error sign appears next to it. I restored my PC more than a few times because of this. I've tired to uninstall it and reinstall it, and that didn't work. I understand that is a firmware update but my PC doesn't want to install it.

Now, is there something I'm doing wrong. Is something I can do? Can you help?

Thank you in advanced.

What's the manufacturer/model of the PC? What firmware version is currently flashed to the drive?

Firmware released by LG for its retail version of the drive won't neccessarily work on OEM drives.

Open Device Manager, right click on your drive and select Properties. Once the properties dialog box pops up select the Details tab and in the Property combo box change the option fron Device Description to Hardware Ids. In the Value text box yoy should see something similar to:

IDE\CdRomHL-DT-ST_DVD+-RW_GSA-H31N_______________B110____

In this example the firmware version is B110.

Since this computer comes with Windows Vista, can I assume your using Vista? What was the error code when the device manager was showing an error?

I didn't see a firmware update for the drive in HP's Software and Drivers page, but I did come across some info on HP's Update software. Have you tried this to see if the app finds update firmware for the dirve?

Although it wasn't listed under the software and drivers page for your computer, I did find a firmware update for the GGC-H20L. The latest release from HP is v1.07 and it was release on 11 Feb 08.
