Default Honda recalls 379,000 cars for airbag hazard

With Toyota having their recall crisis. Honda now announces their recall. This is for airbags that deploy with too much pressure.

Did you notice the years for the recall though? 2001-2002. That's amazing customer service to be issuing a recall on a 9-10 year old vehicle.

Nah, I didn't know the years. I heard the news on the radio this morning and posted the link. Yes, that's pretty good customer service for a recall for 9-10 year cars. Lets hope there's not a trend starting up.

Looks like my '98 Accord and S2000 didn't make the cut. What's up with all the recalls lately?

Seems that Toyota has been delaying issues on certain models and they are finally disclosing the info to the public.

Yeah, but I was listening to our local radio station, and our biggest Toyota Dealership stated they are still doing business as usual. So I have no idea. LOL

I think their PR blitz (i.e. television commercials) in the past week may be having an effect on current and prospective owners. I had my vehicle serviced last week at one of the dealerships (just regular maintenance - oil & filter change) and there were customers in the showrooms, with one couple finalizing their paperwork. Toyota's image and reputation has taken a beating in recent weeks, but I think it will take more than a few recalls to dismiss them altogether from consideration in consumers' eyes.

How many people now even keep cars that long though? I know people keep Hyundai's for a while because of the warranty by my Honda tops out at 6 years for it's warranty.

Of course my wife's brother still has his 92' Civic Hatchback. I don't see a point to doing a recall on a car that would be outside the normal warranty time.

With Hondas and Toyotas it's not that rare. They run forever if maintained. Even my '02 Ford Focus is still going strong!

I plan to keep my car for over 10 years. There's only 1 recall and it was for the power steering. Had that done about 2 years ago.

Honda may not feel obligated to do a recall on a vehicle past its warranty period, but some customers appreciate this gesture because it coveys a perception that a company cares about its products, but more importantly, their customers (this is something that domestic producers simply overlook or disregard, i.e. going the extra step to serve its customers, however trivial it may seem).

Don't get me wrong, my wife and I plan on keeping the Fit for as long as we can. In fact, once the warranty runs out I get to lower it and many other mods too

Honda of America hates me. I think they must have a file on my somewhere that Mr. Ogawa put a big fat red X on the cover of.

BUT, there was a recall on my factory installed spoiler, that no one actually told me about, but before the formal recall I had work done on it at the dealership, under warranty. But the recall was issued after 36k, and naturally they refused to do the recall work for free, even though the first time they worked on it the car did not even have 6.5k miles on it. Naturally I went to my very beloved auto body shop, and that spoiler is going NO WHERE now.

As much as I love my car, my family has really been disappointed by our dealerships and of course Honda of America.

When I wrecked my 2000 civic and was in their showroom getting my hybrid, they causally remarked, that there had been a recall on my airbags, but they they were sure it had nothing to do with my airbags not deploying...

That's unfortunate to hear, but speaking as a non-Honda owner, I am puzzled as to why they would want to charge you for a formal recall service.

The one time I took my vehicle in for a recall bulletin (which I found out on a Toyota forum), the dealership was unaware of the notice, but agreed to inspect the vehicle and replace the part at no charge, even though I was well past the standard warranty period. Come to think of it, I've had pretty good service at three of the Toyota dealerships in my area (I get coupons every month from all three, so whenever I need something done, the deciding factor is price).

As long as you keep up on the oil changes, that TL will go 300k!

Maybe a little, but I'd put my $$ on the potential legal issues of NOT issuing a recall for a potentially life-threatening (or at lease injury-inducing) problem. Imagine someone was killed or seriously injured due to an "overly forceful" airbag deployment. Now imagine a Honda rep testifying under oath that the company knew about the problem, but elected NOT to due anything about it because the affected cars were 9-10 years old.

Cha-ching!
