Default Bluray 'vs' DVD

This may sound like a silly question, but do ordinary DVD's play in a Bluray player?

Yes, and it upscales them up to 1080p, depending on the resolution and HDMI support of your HDTV.

Welcome to the forum!

The only silly question is the one that didn't get asked.

Actually, though, your question would have been better suited for the newbie discussion forum. But that's ok. No big deal.

That's an important question and a big concern for anyone just getting started in Blu-ray.

So rest assured, ordinary DVDs do play in a BD (Blu-ray Disk) player. Also most if not all BD players upscale the DVD 480i to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p depending on your display's native resolution.

However upscaling a 480i DVD will never display the LOD (level of detail) that a 1080p Blu-ray disk displays on a 1080p HDTV.

Lots of other basic questions are answered in the FAQs. Also it's a good idea to use the search function before posting if you don't find the answer in the FAQs.

Have fun!

CDs do not play in every Blu-ray player.

The best thing to do is to check the Players page on this site:

https://www.blu-ray.com/players/

It lists which formats each player handles. Actually, among the major manufacturers, only the very first Sony & LG standalones failed to play CDs.

Almost all new players seem to do CDs.
