I have had a BD-1200 blue ray player for some time now... i have had nothing but problems with it. some blu ray disc's it wont even play. I have done a successful software update 2 times before in the past. Tonight i tried to watch the new indiana jones on blu ray.. it lost signal and i had to restart the player on 2 different occasions. So i decided to check to see if there was a software update available. which there was. i downloaded it and burned it to a dvd/r disc... i put it into the player and it confirmed the update and came to the compare versions screen... at the top of the screen it said to remove the disc from the tray.. since the tray had opened at this point i removed the disc.. then pushed enter.. the tray then closed.. and the player sat for 45 min saying CD/up on the display. nothing was happening. so i shut the power off and turned it back on thinking the directions had to be wrong.. the updated software was on the disc.. why would it tell me to take it out before i had even installed the software on the player.. well now it is a paperweight. it turns on says hello.. but will do nothing else.. the tray will not open.. it will not do anything..
Does anyone have any suggestions? I followed the update proceedure to a T.. i feel that the procedure has to be wrong.. it makes no sense to take the disc out before the player has been updated. I really hope i just did not get screwed out of $250 thanks in advance. |

i have no idea. all i know is i thought i was being overly cautious.. i printed out the directions on my desktop computer up stairs and took both the burned CD/RW (typo above) and the directions down to my tv... i followed the directions on the screen and on the paper.. i inserted the disc.. closed the tray and it took a couple minutes to come up with the compare versions screen.. where it shows the version of the update and the version on the player currently and asks you if you want to continue the update... but on that same screen in parenthesis it said to remove the disc from the tray.. it didnt make sense to me but i followed the directions, then click enter on my remote. the tray closed and it sat for 45 min.. nothing happend other than what i typed above.. now i have a paperweight. |

heh, i like how the price jumped from 250$ in the original post to 300$ in the latest.
i dont know if you're going to be able to find a player that does not require some sort of firmware update from time to time since blu-ray is obviously still coming out with new features, codecs, bd live stuff and what not. |

It is normal for the player to do a tray open after it loads the data from the FW update. When that happens you are to remove the disc from the tray and then WAIT UNTIL THE FW UPDATE COMPLETES AND THE UNIT SHUTS ITSELF OFF. You should not have pushed the tray close button. This procedure is clearly explained in the instructions. You may have bricked the player - but maybe not.
Try this. Unplug the unit for a couple of minutes. Plug it back in and turn the unit on. Wait for it to reach a stable state and then press and hold for about 5 seconds the chapter forward button on the front panel of the player (NOT the remote). This will do a factory reset on the unit. Perhaps that will get it unbricked. Here's the text from the owners manual on a reset: "Press the chapter forward/skip button (on front panel) for more than 5 seconds with no disc inside. All settings including the password will revert to the factory settings. Don't use this unless absolutely necessary." I wish you luck. In the future, make sure you read through the update instructions carefully - it can help avoid disasters. |

He pushed "enter" - which is not part of the instructions. That disrupted the FW update process. He probably could have restored it with the procedure I provided but it's too late now. It is ironic that he asked for help and then when I provided it, he insults me. He got what he deserved. |

What happened to the pic he posted last night where he lost his nut and broke it into all those pieces? Now that was better than anything on television last night.

Looks like he did everything right EXCEPT turning off the player to soon.
If in doubt, leave the player on for a MINIMUM of 2 hours if it does not power off by itself to assure that it's done. On one of my older updates, the unit did not reset and I waited 2 hours before I pulled the plug. Lucky, it was done but for some reason did not automatically power down. This was the first time I did an update with the player connected to my HDTV via the HDMI connection. All previous updates were done using a CRT with component connections so I can see the update progress. *HDMI output blanks out the screen during the FW update process. Samsung should update their FW update procedure to indicate the correct approximate update time, which is well beyond 4-5 minutes. Quote:
