Default Kick-Ass (Reboot)

Quote:
Even as he works on the final days of his upcoming spy romp Argylle, director Matthew Vaughn is hard at work reimagining his classic, down-and-dirty superhero franchise, Kick-Ass.

Rumors and reports of a third Kick-Ass movie have plagued the internet for years, ever since Kick-Ass 2 hit theaters in 2013. Now, 10 years later, Vaughn has an update on what fans can expect from the long-awaited threequel.

“Big update: That [we’re going to] start filming ‘Kick-Ass The Reboot,’” Vaughn told SYFY WIRE at New York Comic-Con 2023.

“Which is like nothing that’s ever been done on film before,” he continued.

While Vaughn couldn’t get into detail, he mentioned that his team has one other, unannounced film to work on after Argylle — and then, it’s time for the new Kick-Ass.

“Which is very, very exciting,” Vaughn said. “Because I felt with Kick-Ass, I would like to make a Kick-Ass 3 with those characters but I think we just need to use a sorbet shall we say to cleanse everyone’s palate, remind everyone that Kick-Ass is crazy and different. This movie will be talked about like, everyone like ‘What did they go and do?’”

As for what fans can expect from it? “It’s the spirit of the first Kick-Ass done in a modern way,” he assured.

I liked the first 2, and i am interested but the title and premise has me a little skeptical.

Wasn't the first Kick@ss film in modern times?

A big producer presented the creator of the first Kick@ss with a large sum of money and said, "Can you reboot your film, cause we can't think of new ideas".

Why not just make a new film, new story with new characters set in modern times and call it Kick@ss: New Generation or something? Reboot... It'll be called by the same title then.

The first film is entertaining and an over-the-top action film. The 2nd one was decent but couldn't match the energy of the first IMO. That villain kid kind of took over the movie too much IMO compared to the heroes. I'll have to rewatch both films though, it's been years. The guy who will be Kraven in the 2024 film, Kraven, was one of the main heroes in the original.

I'd rather see a 3rd film with Aaron Taylor Johnson and Chloe Grace Moretz reprising their roles. With Vaughn directing. The second film suffered from him not directing it.

Yeah, they are older now than when they played the characters. But even when they were first cast they were older than the age the characters were in the comics.

This has actually happened in the comics. The creator, Mark Millar, wrote a comic called Kick-Ass: The New Girl where a girl becomes the new Kick-Ass. I wonder if that Vaughn's reboot is about.

I would love a 3rd one with the old cast. But this sounds like a train wreck.

“So it’s none of the characters from the other Kick-Ass,” he said. “We’d like to bring them back after the reboot. This reboot is just going off on a tangent that I can’t really talk about now. But it’s fun.”

The way he describes it makes it seem like it’s something being made in order for him to keep the film rights to Kick-Ass while maintaining the option of eventually doing something more with the original characters in the future. Does anyone know if there’s a stipulation like that?

I know there was an attempt at a “Millar-verse” on Netflix and I think there was some discussion of doing a TV show on there until Jupiter’s Legacy flopped.

I did a quick search on that. Doesn’t seem like Kick-Ass was involved in that. But this news makes me wonder if Vaughn and his production company need to make a Kick-Ass movie every so many years or else they lose the rights like what Sony apparently has to do with Spider-Man. Cause it seems like a waste of time to “go off on a tangent” with this reboot if he wants to do some with the original characters in the future.

Willing to give this a chance as long as it sticks more closely to the original comics. I mostly hated every change they made for the films.

I just wish they would have finished the original trilogy. The second portion was the weakest, but parts 1 and 3 were really strong. I pretty much guessed it would never get closure, but really don't feel like we need a reboot either.

What happened to Matthew Vaughn? Like, seriously. Back in 2017, hot off the heels of the first Kick Ass, X-Men: First Class and the first Kingsman, he was in talks to direct Man of Steel 2 and I would've given anything to see that.

Now it feels like he's creatively bankrupt, and keeps trying to re-do the stuff that worked, with diminishing returns: Kingsman sequels, Kick Ass reboot and Argylle (which could easily pass for another Kingsman spinoff). This is what too much Mark Millar does to a person.
