I have a Sony 55 rear projection and I just don't get that "pop" with the best transfers (i.e Cars, Pirates, Ratatouille, etc.) like some of you speak about.
The picture is good, just not great. Is this due the limitations of the rear projection technology? Should I just bite the bullet and upgrade to Plasma or LCD? thanks |

I usually avoid rear projection that can lead to very tight viewing angles. I hate color distortion in images.
But if it works for you, make sure you first check all the connections and calibrate your screen. Only if everything is hooked up right AND you have calibrated it, and you still don't like it, then you can consider upgrading to an LCD or Plasma. |

how old is your set? does it get a lot of use? My 50" sxrd looked like shit for the first few months untill it started breaking in. Now 8 months later it looks amazing the pq is so sharp and clear quit a difference from when I first got it. A friend of mine bought the 60 " sxrd and his also looked flat and blaw he would come over an look at my set and say your tv looks way better than mine. Now about 4 months later his set is looking great the detail keeps getting finer and finer. There's alot to break in player cables and tv I used to put my player on repeat and let it all play while was at work.

Do you mean the KDF-E55A20 Grand Wega V? If so, I had the same set and the same reaction to HD on it. It was a vast improvement over SD, but just did not have the "pop" as the same content on my other (smaller) plasma sets. I adjusted the settings so they were dead-on with Avia, and even replaced the bulb because I thought maybe that was causing the dullness. Nothing seemed to improve things much, so I bit the bullet 2 months ago and bought a 58" Pany plasma.
Best decision I ever made. I could not be happier with the picture, and more importantly, I'm not frustrated anymore every time I watch something. Edit: Sorry, I read the model number wrong. Doesn't change my impression of my old set, which was very highly rated. Last edited by My_Two_Cents; 06-16-2008 at 10:30 PM. |

the SXRD has 1:10,000 true contrast ratio and 2.5ms response time, only top-tier plasmas could even be comparable, and you'll never find an LCD that can even come close to that (yet). if your SXRD picture doesn't blow away other HDTVs then it simply comes down to something wrong with your settings or set-up. |

Wow, you are the first person who I've seen actually recommend this. Every other calibration setting I have read on the KDS #A2000 tv's recommend for this to be turned off. Question: I notice a lot of you guys keep your sharpness setting very low, like 25 or less. I have tried that but honestly, I don't like it as much. There seems to be less detail and text on screen is noticably fuzzier. Why is it recommended to keep the sharpness down so low? Doesn't that make the image less crisp? Incidentally, mine is set at 65. |

I used a calibration disk, that is how I got a low sharpness setting #. for the Detail Enhancer ON, on AVS, most people have it set too high... sure your not confusing it with edge enhancement that adds mosquito noise. a2000 tweek thread... http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=702606 Last edited by clyon; 12-23-2008 at 07:57 PM. |

I have a Sony SXRD rear projector TV, the KDS 50-A2000, and when they're properly calibrated they offer a very film-like image with some of the best detail and picture quality available anywhere near their price category. Sony's current LCD sets have yet to surpass the SXRD's, especially when considering on-screen action shots or live sports.
To get a good feel for the proper settings for this TV go to www.tweaktv.com . There you will find a database of ISO certified calibration settings that have been used with various HDTV models. Obviously each HDTV unit might have a slight build variance, but it will give you a good starting point. Of course nothing beats an in-home professional calibration, but this is the next best starting point, if followed up with the DVE blu-ray calibration disc. |

I have a KDS-55A2020 and could not be more pleased. I went to the store to specifically buy a 50 inch Panasonic Plasma. I looked at the Sony and changed my mind. I am a picky SOB and I just could not be more pleased after 1 year with this TV.
My settings... Standard- Advanced Iris- High Picture- 85 Brightness- 52 Color- 51 Hue- 0 Color temp- Cool Sharpness- 36 Noise reduction- Low All HDMI connections. Running a HD cable box, a PS3 Blu-ray and a Toshiba HDDVD all through a Denon AVR-2309CI. I used the calibration disc that Circuit City gave me with the TV. I use the above setting for most everything (movies, TV). For ball games, I lighten it up some by changing to a brighter advanced iris setting. Great tv! I hate that Sony quit making them. |
