I remember a few months ago, all over the place was news about BD Touch, the application that would let iPod touch and iPhone users control their Blu-ray player from their iPod/iPhone, and even get video and other content through it.
Well months have gone by (that was back in April) and no new anything on it. I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything or knows anything about it. I did find out that it is not an application, but a tool that can be used by companies and studios to connect their applications to a BD-Live capable player. I am not sure exactly how it works, but it looks like it is available now to Apple iPhone/iPod devs. In fact, I am willing to take a look at it myself so I am downloading what I can for it but a professional company would do a much better job than I. |

I agree, the iPod Touch is a nice device to have. And if it could control movies, and receive special content, and maybe even exclusive content, that would be awesome.
If you have one, you should download the new Remote App they made, it works perfectly and I can control my iTunes from anywhere inside my house now. I love it. And with tech like that, BD Touch has a lot of potential. I am not saying make it just a remote, but perhaps you should be able to get downloads, trivia facts, interactive games, IMDB hook up, wallpapers, ringtones, news feeds, etc. Maybe even person feedback to each user connected. Imagine having your own commentary so you can listen to it how you want to without bothering anyone else. Or something like Rifftrax (rifftrax.com) could use this to keep their own commentaries in sync with the film and let you download the latest riffs. It has TONS of potential, and could change the way people interacte with their movies all over again. |

Netblender (the developer) has stated that the first BD Touch-enabled discs should be out some time "this fall," though I haven't seen anything from them on which studio(s) are evaluating their SDK. The current revision of the SDK works with iPhone, iPod Touch, Blackberry, and Google Android devices. In the future, support for other WiFi-enabled devices can be added, though some features that could be made would be dependent on the hardware in the device.
As for what potential features actually get made is up to the studios. The SDK provides the framework for 2-way data transmission between the BD-Live player and the WiFi device, but its largely left up to the company doing the disc authoring as to what features they want.to use on a particular title. If you've got skills coding Java and authoring Blu-ray titles, you can check out the SDK by registering at: http://www.netblender.com/technology...ch_connect.asp . Netblender's DoStudio authoring solution has BD Touch support integrated and can be used without as much coding, though its definitely not free, past the 30-day trial. If you do make a disc, you then need to have BluFocus QA a test disc before sending it off for replication. |

In spite of Apple abusing their dominance more and more, I think they have made some brilliant steps in the right direction in terms of home use. Now just waiting for them to adopt blu-ray media. I think we may see it with the next Mac Pro (last update was in January). And imagine a BD-capable Mac Mini? Talk about a monster HTPC... |

BluFocus and Netblender are working together to create some very exciting BD Touch Applications that will be available to Studios and other productions companies in the upcoming months. These applications will be certified and ready for use on projects.
