There are a ton of threads on the subject with the same or similar budget, so I'd suggest skimming through them. Have you done any listening yet? Is there a speaker or receiver brand you'd prefer?

I'd definitely recommend to go out and take a listen to decide what you like and don't like. Do you like horn tweeters? Think they're too harsh? Are you looking at a 5.1 or 7.1 setup?

To add something constructive, I don't think you can go wrong with the Onkyo 605 and up, the Yamaha 663 and up, or even Marantz, Denon or Pioneer receivers. Polks and Klipsch are good entry points into the speaker world, and people here love the eD 300 subs.

Besides looking around the site for more info, I have one bit of advice no matter what you do.
Get a receiver that supports HDMI. With HDMI, you will get the best sound, and the easiest hook up. HDMI supports BOTH audio and video in one cable, so all you have to do it connect your PS3 to your receiver via HDMI and them your receiver to your TV via HDMI. This gives you the best sound, and the best picture. There are lots of receivers in the price range you are looking at, and lots of speakers too.

To add to that last post, make sure the reciever is not HDMI passthrough. Those will not act as anything but a switch. You want a reciever that will accept audio over HDMI.

Got to agree with aramis109 above. Your best bet is to go out and start listening. I recommend checking the local phone book and also doing searches online to find addresses and phone numbers of places. Then go in and listen to the different equipment. With a $1500 total budget, I would go 5.1 which would allow you to get the best speakers for the money. (I am also guessing that with you being a college student, the room you plan on putting these in is not larger than 12x19.)

Mostly, I suggest doing some listening, as everyone's tastes are a little different.

Personally, I would suggest listening to some Klipsh speakers and some Paradigm. For some reason, I wasn't as big a fan of the Polk, and B & W were out of my price range.

I also agree that the Onkyo 605 is a great entry level receiver.

Main thing is to listen around, as everyone has different taste.

My setup is:

cost me around $1200

And the Onkyo 605, which I got on sale for $299 before tax.

Hi. Here are some suggestions:

2 Polk Floorstanders

2 Polk Surrounds (can be used as great surrounds)

Polk Center

eD subwoofer (may I suggest the new black finish?)

Onkyo 606 (see my sig below for link)

av123.com often has some good deals on speakers. I would go with the Onkyo for a receiver, I've got the 805 and am happy with it. The 606 should be very good for the money as well.

I went with an Onkyo 605 and a Polk 7.1 speaker system recommended by Driver King and some others. Great system and didn't break my wallet.
