Default 60Hz vs 120 Hz Refresh Rate

Sorry for my ignorance but can someone tell me the difference between a Flat Panel LCD which has a screen refresh rate of 60Hz vs one with a screen refresh rate of 120HZ.

Would it be worth paying $200 more for a higher refresh rate?

Thanks ...

2 hundo price diff? i'd go with the 120hz

on some content, the 120hz looks to gimmicky, but you can always turn it off if needed.

Thanks for the replies.

I was looking at the Sony KDL-46V4100 (60 Hz) and the Sony KDL-46W4100 (120 Hz)

*shakes fist*

The 120hz is the refresh rate. It can not be changed. It's static on the set. What CAN be changed is the Motionflow/Motionplus/whatever technology where it interpolates frames.

The benefit of 120hz is two-fold: First, it's supposed to help with fast-moving scenes like action and sports- it helps reduce blurring. Secondly, 24p sources SHOULD be able to be resolved without 3:2 pulldown (since 24 goes evenly into 120, there is no need for 3:2 trickery that can cause judder).

Personally, if I were buying an LCD, I'd buy a 120hz just for the 3:2 pulldown issue alone, since it's something that I notice on my current set.

Is your motionflow set to high? I have heard turning it down fixes that issue.

I too was worried about the 60hz for sports when I bought my tv but I have a sony with 60hz and I don't see any blurring or pixelation in fast action sports like football. the only time you see any lag is when the signal itself lags during a live broadcast, which can happen on any set. 99.9% of the time it's not an issue with sports.

the only time I see pixels is when I'm watching a movie on a HD cable channel and for a mili second or two in a super fast action sequence you will see some.

for example: in Transformers when the robots are falling and tumbling and twisting rapidly you will see some for a half second or so.

I usually watch action moves in blu ray anyway and you don't get any pixels with that at all.

Buying an LED-based LCD with 60Hz will give you a superior picture to an LCD with 120Hz on all content.

Better blacks, better contrast and substantially better motion resolution.

Correct. 120Hz is for motion blur reduction only(cannot be changed). The "gimmick" part ixlegitballinxl is referring to is "Motion Flow" or "Auto Motion Plus"(Samsung) which causes the 3D looking effect. For the last time, 120Hz does not cause the "Gimmicky" look.

I'm looking at the Samsung LED DLP HL67A750 that has 60hz instead of 120hz. Anyone know if I'd notice a difference if it was 120hz instead? Should I wait until next year and see if the next gen models have 120hz or just splurge this X-mas and go with the current model?

Ok now i get it, i always thought it was the 120hz that made it look like that.
so 120hz will look like 60hz but just smoother?

That's the theory anyway. Personally, I don't know if I could tell the difference, but I bet I'd notice the absense of judder in 24p. For me, that makes it worth it if you're getting an LCD. Of course, if I could go back, I'd get a plasma, but that's a different topic.

That is a great TV. Buy it. And the 120hz on a DLP I feel does not look as "daytime soap opera" as the 120hz on most LCD's.

No you can't turn the 120hz off. The TV is always displaying in 120hz. The motion enhancers (AMP,Motion Flow ect) are what can be turned off and make it look "gimmicky."

120hz is well worth it. It does help reduce judder in faster moving scenes but it dosn't eliminate it. Definently go for the 120 hz set.
