Default Bd+cd?

TOKYO, Nov 05, 2008 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- SMUTF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Sony Music Entertainment Inc. has used its own Blu-ray Disc technology to develop an audio CD with high sound quality.

The Blu-spec CD complies with the standard for conventional CDs, so it can be listened to on commonly available CD players. Sony Music seeks to win back consumers, many of whom now prefer to get their music online.

On Dec. 24, the firm will release 60 titles of classical music, jazz and other genres in the new format for 2,500 yen (US$25.10) apiece -- 715 yen more than a conventional CD.

Very short article. The above is all there is. IF only Sony was this much synergistic with SACDs.

I love this comment from Engadget...

I suppose there's a SD and a HD track? I can already imagine the sales conversations in Hi-Fi stores.

"Yeah, hello, I'm looking for the Decca record of the 5th Brandenburg concerto, do you have that in stock?"

"Let me see... do you want the CD version or the BS CD version?"

"BS CD?"

"Yeah, see, this is the new Sony hiqh definition disc, which offers improved audio quality when played back in a device that meets the new standard, while remaining compatible to normal CD players. Let me show it to ya on this Denon stereo."

*Puts in disc, pushes buttons, music plays*

"So this is normal definition track, which already sounds pretty nice..."

*Pushes some more buttons, music starts over.*

"... and this is the high definition track."

*Grins eagerly*

"Do you hear the difference?"

"..."

"...no."

(uncomfortable silence)

"Can I have my CD now? I gotta go."

So true

I don't see why it wouldn't work. They probably have the same "confusion" with blu movie for a lot of people... even worst when HD dvd was alive. I think its a great idea to have the blu-disc readable on normal cd player. It will ease a lot of the transition (like in the car). The "backward compatibility" is a great plus! How many time do I hear doe blu-ray disc work in my dvd player?

me either. people don't want hybrid cd's. that was proven with scad and dualdisc. both flopped and showed that the customer doesn't want a fancy cd. hybrid or not.

But there wasn't much publicity on SACD (i've never even ear about those before joining in here) so if sony use the blu-ray publicity for their new CD, music fan could begin to fall in the same Hidef hype as video fan. I know they will not beat MP3 format because of the portable uses, but It still could exist for house music

SACD flopped because there was no concentrated synergistic support from Sony's own label. Only catalog releases initially and then only in stereo. Hybrid SACDs and multichannel came later. But support was not given and the marketing of it was off target.

The marketing now should be advocating the buyer to sit and listen the high-def audio with his/her surround setup, while providing portability via the CD Redbook layer. It can no longer be an either or situation.

I found http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News...x?NewsId=24290
which has more info, but I still don't get it. To me it looks like BS is just CD. It does not look to be BD related or to add more. To me it looks like using processes created for BD manufacturing are used to update the CD production to make CDs more robust. Not sure if it will actually affect music playback as Sony claims, but it does not sound as if it changes anything significantly (like SACD or DVD-A or BD-A) I am also not sure if it needs a new player (it is a CD with cleaner pits)

The real problem is getting the other music labels to release their popular titles on this format. One of the big factors in SACD's demise was Warner refusing to release anything on that format (in fact when they found out a subsidiary in Asia had released a SACD they had it pulled immediately).

It's not a format. It's just a CD at the end of the day.

Here's another example of this kind of thing from JVC in Japan:

Super High Material CD

Quote:
The high quality SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) format features enhanced audio quality through the use of a special polycarbonate plastic. Using a process developed by JVC and Universal Music Japan discovered through the joint companies' research into LCD display manufacturing, SHM-CDs feature improved transparency on the data side of the disc, allowing for more accurate reading of CD data by the CD player laser head. SHM-CD format CDs are fully compatible with standard CD players
Sony is (likely) just dueling it out some of the other vendors for bragging rights with the audiophiles in Japan.

How utterly wierd. If people get their music online, then they don't even care about conventional CD quality.

If it uses BD tech to create, then it sounds like duplication, which is EXTREMELY odd for a commercial interest.

I don't know why Sony doesn't simply push BD music.
