Universal Studios Midway (1976)

Midway Blu-ray

Quote:
An expensive war epic, Midway emulates The Longest Day and Tora! Tora! Tora! in attempting to re-create a famous World War II battle from both the American and Japanese viewpoints. The 1942 battle of Midway was the turning point of the War in the Pacific; the Japanese invasion fleet was destroyed, and America's string of humiliating defeats was finally broken. Though the battle itself was sufficiently dramatic to fill two films, Midway also has plotline involving the mixed-race relationship between Ensign Garth (Edward Albert), son of Navy Captain Matt Garth (Charlton Heston), and Haruko Sakura (Christina Kokubo), a Hawaiian girl of Japanese descent. The real-life personages depicted herein include American Admirals Nimitz (Henry Fonda), Halsey (Robert Mitchum) and Spruance (Glenn Ford), and Japanese Admiral Yamamoto (Toshiro Mifune, his voice once again dubbed by Paul Frees, whom Mifune personally selected for the job). For its original road show release, Midway was offered in the "Sensurround" process, which electronically shook and vibrated the audience's chairs during the battle sequences.

Looking forward to owning this and Earthquake which is released on the same day. Even though this is a so-so movie, I have to support war film releases on BD so that better and more war films will be released in the future.

Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Robert Mitchum, Cliff Robertson, Robert Wagner.... An All-Star Cast. Gotta have Midway. Very excited about this and Earthquake.

Extended cut seems unlikely given the stated runtime, which is unfortunate, as I don't think that has been released before.

And don't forget Toshirô Mifune, Tom Selleck, Erik Estrada, and Pat Morita!

If I'm not mistaken...and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I am...isn't the "extended cut" the version that had extra footage filmed AFTER the theatrical release so that it could play on TV?

I know that at least one version contains footage shot when Ted Turner bought the TV rights and wanted to split it into a two-part epic. I've read that the extra footage (Battle of the Coral Sea et al) was filmed specifically for 4x3 TV and can't be properly integrated into the OAR cut.

Yes, the extended cut was shot for the television release of the movie and the additional material is not in widescreen.

I don't think this is possible, as I believe it was shot for TBS (TV) and not the theater.

I always liked this one, but the one thing that always irked me about is that the Japanese speak English rather than Japanese. Also, just in case any of you were wondering Tom Selleck is briefly in Midway. After the island of Midway is bombed he's the guy that says, "They creamed us."

It's still gonna look bad, no amount of restoration can repair the awful looking stock footage that was used to cut corners.
