Default Complaint about THUNDERBALL

I have a small complaint about THUNDERBALL, if you guys havent noticed yet, when the opening titles begin, the screen shrinks a little bit, to the point that you can see the black bars on both sides of the screen, which is kinda annoying, it doesnt happen on the other Bond BD movies just Thunderball.

Have anyone noticed this? It starts exactly when the car shoots water and they blend it into the opening titles, check it out and you'll notice the screen shrinking during the whole titles sequence all the way until the part where Largo enters the building in Paris.

Any input on this?

I saw the movie a week ago, and did not notice anything. I will check it out later.

Sometimes tite seq. were framed differently than the actual film sequences. I've noticed this in a lot of films where the opening titles are framed more in a box format then the screen opens up more as the actual film begins. I can't give any examples but I think we look so much harder at blu ray images that we notice it more.

And this was synch with the Drape system in the cinema. At mine it was... It started 4x3 with drape covering the black arena then when the picture get larger, the drape opened and pop full 2.35:1 screen... It was cute. Doesn't really work that well at home tought but..

Grease does this with the animated opening credits. The film looks prety good in high-def.

They do this so that none of the names in the opening credits get lost due to overscan.

I personally do not like this practice, as that is not how it was presented theatrically. Plus, with the newer, more advanced HDTVs that are on the market you often have the ability to turn overscan off.

Another solution by DVD/Blu-Ray content providers that caters to the lowest common denominator.

Not future proof either. One day we'll all have tvs with no overscan, but these titles will still be zoomed in or squeezed.

Grease is really bad. The image shrinks dramatically during this sequence.

Thunderball is more subtle, but a bad decision none the less.

You may not have noticed if you have some overscan on your tv.

I'd really like to know if the opening titles were reduced or squeezed on the pre-Ultimate Edition dvds of the Bond movies.

Anyone still have these?

My biggest complaint about THUNDERBALL are the telecine lines you see in the transfer.

The windowboxing on these releases was even worse, especially on Live and Let Die and For Your Eyes only. You could even see the side bars on TVs with lots of overscan. The effect is much subtler here.
