Gangs of New York? - Blu-ray Forum

First off, hello to everyone, I'm new around here

I was just about to go out to buy a couple of new blu-ray's, one of which was going to be Gangs of New York (Incredible movie). I happened to check Amazon for a price just now and I see that they have another version of GoNY coming out on blu-ray next week. Is this a mistake? Or is something wrong with the current released version of it

Any help is much appreciated.

Judging by the picture alone it's probably a UK release. Amazon.com has been listing imports in the US section for Blu-ray lately.

The current version of Gangs of New York is probably one of the worst, if not the worst, disc I've seen. It's a poor transfer of a poor master, and for the most part is pretty ugly. Sound is good, though.

I have not seen the BD myself, but the popular opinion is that it is a poor transfer...maybe the worst job on the PQ side by Disney. Welcome aboard.

Hello and welcome to the boards!

By the looks of it the version being "released" next week is an import. The two ratings logos on the front aren't something I'm familiar with on Region 1 releases.

It's ironic that you ask whether this is due to problems with the current release of the movie as this release received an awful lot of negative reaction from folks who feel that the image wasn't up to the standard that the movie deserves.

Gangs of New York is a wonderful movie, but it is not worth buying on Blu-Ray. This is one example where high-def can actually make something look worse... it actually highlights the flaws in the transfer.

This wouldn't be a problem if Disney actually took the time to create a new master. The film has the possibility to look wonderful in high-def.

Well I'm glad I asked before running out to buy it! I assume they will eventually re-do it then? anyone know if that's planned as of now?

A re-release won't happen anytime soon.

As soon as I heard about the poor transfer, which was when I got back from buying it at Target

I have been afraid to even open it, lol. I have seen screen caps though...not pretty

Well I guess I'll go ahead and get it if it's not about to be remade. It's one of my favorite movies and the dvd just doesnt cut it on an hdtv. Thank for the help everyone!

this movie is not worth a buy, maybe a rental. worst ending of all time.

I must be blind because i think it look great on bluray and i am very pleased. Best story of all time, fav movie def buy

It's been reported many times that it is only slightly better.

Your obviously in the minority. There hasn't been one good review of the Blu-ray PQ.

Although for me any some others, the fantastic performance by DDL as Bill the Butcher makes it worth it...he's mesmerizing in that role. It's a shame that there is too much DNR (and so there is a lack in detail) and I recall some color issues...
