So it's my birthday today! happy birthday me. lol
Anyway, My dad, who I live with while in college, knows what Blu-ray is, has bought Blu-ray in the past, but today I received the two things I wanted the most, Back to the Future and Fringe: Season 1... on DVD. Who knows, maybe Mom bought them at the store but she rarely does that anyway. I'm not sure if Dad didn't know the difference but as I said, he's bought BDs in the past. I LOVE the thought don't get me wrong but Blu-ray has me spoiled and those two titles I'd love in HD. Do you think it'd be wrong of me to quietly sell them and buy the BD versions in their place. Don't think he'd know at this point |

I'd just be honest with them and tell them that it's exactly the titles you wanted, but you wanted them in the Blu-ray format and ask if they have the receipt to exchange. They probably wouldn't take offense to that and then also will be a mental note for them to buy Blu-ray when they're shopping for your Christmas presents.

Personally I would thank them for the gifts and then ask for the receipt, return & re-buy them. If they understand you prefer Blu-ray I don't see any reason they would get upset. Your parents may not have relized that they picked up the DVD instead of Blu-ray. Whenever my parents give me gifts they always include a gift receipt knowing that I may occasionaly return them for something else. IMO, I don't think your parents would mind. In fact they may return them and buy you the Blu's themselves.

Does he have the receipt Because I am sure he would understand you wanting to exchange them. You would still be getting what he gave you just in hi def. My mom did the same thing 2 years ago and she was ok with me exchanging them. Also Fringe is one of the best looking Blus I have watched so you really would want the Blu of it.

I'm don't know if I'd say anything or not. If they're still in the shrink wrap then I might just take them to Wal-mart and return them and pay the difference out of pocket to get them on blu-ray. As you said, I'm sure they would never know the difference.

I agree with miller_time22, ask them if they have the receipt so you can get Blu-ray.
I know how you feel, everyone I know knows I'm Blu-ray or the highway, but a couple xmas' ago I got a few DVD's and I was like "um, what I'm supposed to do with this?" LOL It's hard to feign excitement with DVD. |

First of all, happy birthday!!!
Second of all, you should tell them. It happened to me on my birthday last year. I just told my parents something along these lines, "Hey, thanks so much for the present, I really appreciate it. These were exactly the movies I wanted, but these are in DVD and as you know, I'm a Blu-Ray snob. Would you happen to still have the receipt so I can get the Blu-Ray version? Thanks so much once again though for getting it for me." Now, whenever they buy you present of movies, they'll get you the Blu. If you don't say anything...well..you might still be getting DVD's next year and for Christmas this year. :P |

Ask for a gift receipt and then just switch them at the store and pay the difference.
I'm sure you will have a hard time selling them on craig's list or kjiji and even if someone will buy them, you gonna get hit with a loss on the price. oh and Happy Birthday ![]() |

It might be a bit awkward if the OP asks for the receipt and his dad doesn't have it any more.
OP - "Hey dad, thanks for the movies and all, but do you have the receipt so I can exchange the DVDs for blu-rays?" Dad - "No I lost it/threw it away/whatever. Sorry I didn't get you what you wanted. I'll try to do better next time. I hope you can forgive me." And the OP slinks off under a rock somewhere. |

![]() I've gotten over the possibility of getting the "wrong gift" by asking for money only. ![]() @Steve: If done properly, you don't slink under a rock. It's all about tact and timing. As I'm notoriously picky, my family knows better. And.... ![]() Last edited by orion10; 11-03-2010 at 02:52 PM. |

I agree. That's why I mentioned Wal-Mart specifically in my first post up above. They'll take them back without the receipt, assuming they're unopened. Even if the OP only gets store credit he can use that credit toward buying the blus.

But slightly more seriously, most stores can look up your purchases and process a return as long as you know what credit card it was on. BB can look it up using your phone number if you are a RewardZone member, Target and I think Walmart just need to know what credit card it was on to look up the purchase. If you try to do a return without receipt I believe you will only get the lowest price it has sold for recently and not the actual purchase price. |
