Default Optical vs HDMI

I'm looking into a 5.1 surround system, but I'm wondering if there is really a major difference between HDMI and Optical for surround sound delivery.

Thanks in advance ^^

Are you sure? Because It says on PS3 settings that it can output PCM.

Yes. It can output 2 channel PCM through optical, and 7.1 through HDMI.
So if you output PCM through optical, you will be turning 2 channel PCM into 5.1 through dolby pro logic or dts neo. Your best sound comes through HDMI set to Linear PCM on the PS3.

Well, my parents go "Christmas Shopping" for me when I tell them what to get... as in, a model number and picture. I'm not really into fancy features... what would be the bottom end for HDMI enabled 5.1 systems? And about how much more should I expect if I wanted wireless?

Thanks for the help again, by the way.

You don't want wireless. They are subject to lose signal and most people on here will try to stear you clear of them. What do you think they would be will to spend for you?

Probably about $300 or less. I know they exist in that range, but any recommendations?

Hmmm... what about this one?

EDIT: Never mind, apparently there are HDMI issues there...

Wow, these are all so deceptive, a lot of them say HDMI surround sound but the only HDMI is on some dumb DVD Upconverter that comes with it XP

In addition, HDMI can transmit SACD and DVD-A signals. Optical cannot.
