Default Possibility of Trading my Dad (PS3 Questions)

a few weeks back, I purchased an 80GB PS3. It's been fantastic, and I've talked my dad into getting one.

He is a little tight on money, and is also weary of spending $399 on a new PS3. The fact is, he actually owes me $100 for a sport coat that I bought him awhile back, so I told him that I would cut him a deal.

The deal is this:

He buys the $399 Metal Gear Solid 4 Edition PS3 (40GB HDD), and he can not worry about paying me back for the sport coat. The only catch is this - he has to trade me for my PS3, and I get to keep my 80GB drive while he gets to have the 40GB put in my current PS3.

He likes the sound of it, and we both will be happy. So, would there be any worries about swapping the HDD's out? Is it an easy process? Would I need to clean install them first, or just swap em' over?

Well, I'd rather keep 80GB of storage rather than the 40GB (even if it is the metal gear solid edition). If I just swapped consoles, I'd have the 40GB, and he'd have the 80GB.

If money is tight for him why are you making him spend money?

It doesn't sound like a bad idea if he's in the market for a Blu-ray player. I mean, I see what your premise is, "Hey, Dad, instead of spending $300 on some Blu-ray player, get the PS3 for the extra $100 and don't worry about 'paying me back'"

So, if he's up for it, I guess I say go ahead and do it. I'm not sure how the HDD swap works but I know some content will not play on a different PS3, but I don't know if that's a problem if you're bringing the whole hard drive instead of trying to transfer or back it up to a different drive. Just a heads up. Good luck.

I don't think I understand. You have an 80GB PS3. He has nothing. He owes you money. He buys a $400 40GB console.

You want to keep the 80GB console. He is to keep the 40GB console.

He owes you a hundred dollars. Instead, he pays $400 for the console, doesn't owe you money anymore, and keeps the 40GB???

Sounds kinda complicated. Isn't that the same thing as saying, "Forget about paying me back, just go buy yourself a 40GB PS3."

He wants to keep the hard drive but he wants the Metal Gear Solid design of the 40gb console.

Well, it's more like this:

A) He owes me $100
B) He buys a $400 40GB PS3 for himself.
C) Instead of owing me $100, he trades me PS3's, while keeping his own HDD and me keeping my own HDD.

So what he gets:
$100 off a PS3 (He's really only out $299 instead of $399). I'm also able to get Amazon Prime on this unit as well...so those numbers are exact

What I get:
MGS PS3 with my own harddrive

Both parties are happy. I am the one getting slightly shafted, but it also comes down to me making a good recommendation for a great Blu-Ray player, rental box, and a good gaming system for him and my little brother.

I was just concerned about the swapping issue. The only thing important that I have on my PS3's HD is game saves. Everything else is just trailers and demos and such. I wonder if I'd have to wipe it clean to just avoid any hassle with the PSN stuff?

I also wonder, since the 40GB system is older, are there any hardware differences? Or are they pretty much the exact same box? I really don't care either way. It's hardly worth $100 to me, but if its the only way he will pick himself up a decent player for XMAS, then I'll bite so everyone will be happy.

Plus I want to frag his ass on resistance.

Way too complicated.

I would say... take the sport coat out of the equation first. If he isn't going to pay you back for that take note and don't lend him money again.

Now about the PS3.... If I were you I wouldn't be concerned about trying to get a little extra hard drive space or a MGS edition... If he knows the PS3 is fun maybe he'll get one and that's great.

I don't think him buying one and you trying take new one with the best of the old one is very fair and it's all got nothing to do what whatever the real story of the sport coat was.

I made similar "special" deals with friends when I built them PC's (using parts from my old PCs and parts they bought new to make the deal good for both of us) and ... looking back on it I wouldn't have bothered. So my inclination is to do the things I suggested.

Sorry brian it actually makes sense..

First he wants his dad to buy a ps3 he is willing to forgive a debt because he really wants his dad to buy the ps3 but more or less he really wants the mgs design.

He is willing to forgive the debt and that is his decision..

Originally I thought this thread was about trading fathers..

YOUR DAD OWES YOU MONEY!?!?!

i'm sure you owe him more than $100 worth of childhood shoes, clothes, food, aspirin, pediatrician... anyway.... your family is your family.
don't make your dad spend money on something like a PS3 if he doesn't have the money for it.

and as a xmas gift, tell him not to pay you back for the sports coat.

the PS3 will drop in price, and i'm sure if he wanted a PS3 badly, he'd be the first one out on black friday.

the thing w/ a PS3 is, it isn't expensive, it just costs a lot.
there is a difference. if your dad doesn't have $400 for the ultimate entertainment solution, then he probably doesn't need it.

i'd say no deal.

From the title of the thread, I thought you were going to physically trade your dad for something else in return

Swapping hard drives is very easy, you will have to reformat each one though once they are swapped so remember to save anything you value before you do the HD swap.

Swapping hard drives is a piece of cake. Only takes like 5 mins. I think there is a thread on here that shows you how to. If not, google it. When I did it I looked at a site that had it step by step and a picture with each step. Make sure you backup/save whatever you want to keep off of your hard drive before swapping.

I dont understand...

Your dad is so tight on money that he needs you to buy him a sports coat, and you hold that as debt over him, but you STILL think he should be buying a PS3?

He owes you money ($100 for a sportcoat!) that you wont just drop, and he obviously cant just pay back willy nilly, and you want him to drop $400 on a PS3 so he can watch movies, and you can snake the MSG4 PS3 from him?

Seriously?

Do you hate you dad? Why dont you just make him buy it, smash a lamp in his face, take it and remind him at thanksgiving dinner he still owes you $100.

Either you are leaving something critical out, or you should be ashamed of yourself. If you are a grown man holding $100 of debt over your own father (who is tight on money) you are jerk, and if you are a kid holding debt over your folks who have money problems while buying a PS3 for yourself, you should be kicked out of the house.

God, I hope my dad does not call down all the loans he gave me for clothes over the years.

Wurd to that. I figure between daycare and other child expenses my 18 month old costs us about $1200 a month. It is getting a little cheaper lately since he's older but we'll have to buy him 24 month clothes after winter, and his 18 month old jeans won't fit for next winter...

Your dad don't owe you shiznit. You should be ashamed.

By the way, I'm assuming the dad is planning on charging the PS3 so he can get into debt and really not have any money. God, I hope I never have to borrow money from my son. Scratch that. I'd rather lose my house or whatever before borrowing money from my son. Yikes!

Amen. I think I must be missing something else, though. I thought the MGS bundles were only limited edition, and were 80gb with B/C? Have they made a new one now, too? Not that I care, I love my fully B/C 60gb. I just hope to eventually get a straight answer (probably via PM if anyone actually HAS one) about whether a future firmware update will allow the PS3 to be used as a Television recording device (or would it have to have a tuner in order to be able to do so?)
