Default I want a system under $300 mainly for music but also for Xbox 360

Tips?
the music is more important for me - so I want a sub too.
It is for a bedroom.

I'd say get as little as possible.......

If it were for mainly music, you really wouldn't want a subwoofer anyways..... just 2 channel, and honestly, for $300, you can't get much more than 2 channel anyways.

I'd get a pair of the cheap polk towers that are always on special (not sure the model) and find an old receiver that someone is selling cheap without HDMI connections.

If it were just for music, I'd want a sub! I agree with Beta Man about the Polk towers though. Maybe a pair of Polk monitor 50's would do the trick.

I agree, 300 for surround sound will give you garbage sound compared to solid 2 ch. setup. This is a bedroom, you wouldn't wan't a lot of speakers for just xbox and music. Get a 2 ch reciever with optical input or for a little more for get a good 5.1 reciever for the future. The xbox can output Digital stereo 48khz. I started out the same way; my old Fisher amp and large Fisher 3-ways (still use as mains- no$$). I swear the first time I heard mongoose storm by on those speakers I just stopped playing and started listening.

EDIT: 300 will only get you used equipment

If you are going to be using it with the XBox alot, then you really do want Dolby Digital 5.1. It's a huge advantage in multiplayer gaming when you can hear the enemy trying to sneak up behind you, hear what direction he is coming from, and hear where all the action is taking place on the map. All you will really need is a HTiB that has at least one optical input and does Dolby Digital.

2.0 is nice for music, but if what you are really looking for is something to get you more into your gaming and $300 is your budget...... a HTiB will be just the ticket for you.

Something like this may be just the ticket for you, but do your research and pick the one you think best suits you. There are tons of options available in that price range and some are pure crap while others are pretty nice for that price. Just remember optical input & Dolby Digital

Sorry...... just read your response that it was mostly for music. Scrap my previous post if the quality of music is more important than the gaming aspect.

NAHH! Two out five HTiBs (my old one and friends') I tried could pick up advantageous surround info (too bland and muffled). Obviously you could hear the major background noises, not the minor ones. Only now that I upgraded I could hear some guy crouching, reloading or driving in the distance from the surround elements. It is pretty funny when I turn around and stick em'.

Given that your system is intended to be used more for music, forget about a sub. $300 won't buy much of an amp and speakers anyway, so straining the budget further by trying to add a sub is pointless.
