Unhappy Onkyo 805 sound problem

I have an onkyo 805 connected to a panasonic bd-30 using an hc1500 front projector for display and definitve tech cinema pro 1000's. I just did the audissey sound calibration thing with the mic and after the calibration was complete and calculated it turned all my speakers down to -5db fronts and center. it set the rears to -.05 and set my subwoofer to -4.5 my fronts were crossed over at 100hz the center @ 125hz and the rears @ 70hz. Is this ok I almost feel that it sounded better before the calibration. Any advice please. I don't think I'm getting optimal sound and there is no bass coming from my sub. Also I have to crank the volume way up to like 60 or 65 for regular dialog and then when the action kicks in I find my self turning it down a bit cuz it gets really loud. It sucks to ave to watch a movie while holding on to the remote for 2 hours of continuos adjustments Please help. Thank you.

I didn't like the sound of Audyssey either, I turned the EQ to off and manually entered everything, I enjoy the sound 100x more.

And you can fix your level problem by going to source setup / intellivolume and setting it to +3.

Also dug this up, it's a pretty solid guide on what to set your crossovers at:

Large floor standers: 40-60 Hz
Small floor standers: 50-70Hz
Large stand mounted / bookshelf speakers: 50-80Hz
Small stand mounted / bookshelf speaker: 60-90Hz
Small satellite speakers: 80-160 Hz

I think it adjusts the "volume" of the source signal somehow, I had the same problem as you, this seemed to help.

if you have an SPL meter, after running the audyssey setup, what you can do is calibrate all your speakers to 75dbs, as audyssey doesn't really accurately set the speaker levels. You can mess with the crossovers to your speaker's specs also. I'm sure after you have done this you'll feel having audyssey on sounds better than without.

I personally wouldn't use intellivolume. What I would do is use Audyssey and then tailor it to suit. The crossovers posted aren't a bad start- I might recommend to set them all to 80hz and then adjust them from there till you find what works best for you.

One thing is that new soundtracks (especially lossless ones) are a lot more dynamic, so there are louder and quieter highs and lows. It does take some getting used to but it absolutely re-creates the theater experience in my opinion.

I played with the intellivolume a little. i guess the def techs run loud so in order to get them to really sing i have to crank up the receiver. i don't own an SPl meter but i probably won't even know how to use it.

If dialog is the problem try adjusting the center channel until you get the desired results. As for your sub what do you have the gain on the sub at?Try adjusting that maybe turn it up to 1/3 or half way and run audessy again using at least 6 positions. Although some disagree with this try setting your fronts to full range and turn on double bass that adds a little more kick if thats what your looking for.

I find Audessy lacking of any 'soul'. Everything sounds very flat and the voices don't have any depth. I'll admit, it tones down any harshness anywhere, but that's because everything sounds flat.

I had the same thing happen to me with my 805. I went in and turned each speaker up to a +6 and then set the subwoofer and center channel to a +8. I also went in and turned the intellvolume up to a 12. I am still playing around with my subwoofers and I have since turned the volume dowm to a +2.5 because I am running 2 subs and the bass was a little to much..also trying to get it set on the back of the sub too. I used to have to run the volume on about 80 for it to sound really good and now I can run it between 35 to 40 and it blows the pictures off the walls. I hope this helps and good luck....

there is a link in this same forum how to use an SPL. Since you think yours sounded better before calibration, do this, run audyssey and see how it sounds, then turn off audyssey and see how it sounds as that would be a truer comparision as it only turns off the EQ and the speaker levels would be the same. As before you were comparing it before audyssey changed the speaker levels. I should correct myself and say that audyssey does accurately adjust the speaker levels to about 2db +/- of each other, it just doesn't adjust it to the THX desired 75db. I think mine adjusted to about 68db and using the SPL to bump up the levels to 75dbs did the trick. AVS forums has a huge thread on the 805 which would help (or confuse) you how to get the best out of your receiver. There is also a dedicated Audyssey thread as well. I hope that helps. Another thing make sure you do all eight positions, your manual will have a template on where to position your mic.

Thanks for all the great advice so far. I didn't know the onkyo had a double bass feature how do you acivate that. I'll be investing in an SPl meter soon perhaps that would help. I'll just keep playing around until it sounds good. audessy set the front and center speakers crossed over at 100 and 125 hz. will running them at 75 or 80hz damage the speakers lower the sound making it deeper in bass or would it cutt off to much of the other sounds and higher frequencies whats a normal setting for fronts and center. is it common for the Onkyos sound volume to be so loud or is it because my speakers aren't set right yet. Thanks to everyone on this site.

To activate double bass you have to set the speakers to "full" and then the option becomes available.

I'm kind of confused- what kind of speakers do you have? I see a def tech pro 600 5.1 set, and a pro 1000 center. On the 600's, they have a pretty good frequency response for such small speakers. I've read it's good to give some rolloff room- approximately 20hz. Whether this is true or not or sounds good to you is subjective, but it's a good starting place. Try setting the crossovers for your fronts, center and surrounds at 80hz to start and see how the sound is. If it sounds distorted, raise the crossover.

You're probably going to have to play with it.
