Here you go

Shuhei Yoshida finally answers the burning question on many, many, many hardcore gamers minds... Where the f@#k are the RPG's!!!!?? In a poorly translated Japanese interview from a recent Famitsu magazine a good soul who visits the site has been able to piece together 3 things for us ...

1 - Sony is disappointed in their Japanese business model at the moment
2 - Sony is working on 3rd party relations
3 - Sony is developing 5 RPG's internally for their fanbase

While we already knew 2 of those things we, or at least I, didn't know the last one... I remember seeing an incredible looking series of Screenshots from the now defunct Gamesblow's website in which he said were Legend of Dragoon 2... they were absolutely mind blowing for an RPG. I can only hope one of these is in fact LOD2. We also know Dark Cloud 3 is being worked on... but the other 3 seem like a mystery to me.

A direct, not entirely accurate reading, of the snippet.

--
FM - A strong interest here in Japan is in role playing or deep strategy based games, why has Sony not played to these strengths with the Ps3?

Shuhei Yoshida - The inception of a console is one of trial and error. It is never one set path one takes to success and success should never come from an easy path. When a new console is introduced into the market it is expected of it to do well and to try new things in the process. We have tried many new things with the PS3 and will continue to try an introduce more western style games here to the Japanese market. With that said we are not ruling out our fanbase and their needs we are very aware of what they want and are working internally to create software that fits their needs.

FM - Anything you can speak of here?

Shuhei Yoshida - Names, no. But we have 5 projects underway inside of Sony that will cater to the fanbase you have described. We are also working with 3rd party to ensure we have those kinds of games coming in from their studios as well.

--

So there you have it... a shoddy translation at best but it seemed pretty legit to me. You be the judge and I guess we'll find out when the mag drops, yeah?

Thats where region free comes into play on ps3 (most games I import I usually get the english translation from most game sites about how to get through the game). It may not be perfect but darn does it make it better sometimes than waiting.

Just a rumour for now. Claims like that don't usually go unnoticed by more 'reputable' sites and even badly translated, I don't think even Yoshida's that willing to share what's in the works.

I'm all for some RPG's if this rumor is true. I'm a big fan of Dragon Quest, loved Dragon's Quest VIII on the ps2. Govnor!

I think the problem is that RPGs take such a long development cycle now that we will not see these for years possibly.

You mean Legend of Legaia 3 (2 is already out as Legaia Dual Saga).

I hope there's also a Wild Arms title in there.

Even if this is true (which is something I personally doubt very much) SCE haven't done a first party RPG since The Legend of Dragoon which was a very long time ago and most of the staff have moved on (many to Level 5 and Square).

I sincerely doubt Sony's ability to produce a first rate RPG in house.

There's not a lot of things that SCE can't do, but RPG is one of them...

Sounds good to me. LoD was fun back in the day. Like many, I've been waiting for a truly good RPG, other than the FF franchise. Too many shooters are being made nowadays, IMO. Hopefully the rumored RPGs are all good and make it stateside.

What about SCE's owned studios, like Media Vision?

Wild Arms?

Have you played a recent one?

Anyway, they are not a wholly owned subsidiary of SCE.

I have. They're definitely not as good as they used to be, but they're still okay. I don't really like the HEX system, though.

And oh.
