Default Is Direct tv hi def worth it?

The direct tv guy just came out to my house to hook up my direct tv. I ordered the hi definition channels, but the satalite is going to have to go somewhere that I really don't want it.

Is there that big of a difference? or should I just go with the regular package?
I mean just how much better is the hi def channels vs their regular counterparts?
The installer is going to come back in the morning in order to let me sleep on it. He said himself that he didn't think the HD package was worth it because they are just duplicate channels of ones you already have and you don't get anything new. Please give me your opinions,I know it'll look better but is it blu-ray vs dvd better, or slightly better?

By the way, the dish won't be sticking out in the front yard, but it will be right up against the back of the house where I'll have to walk around it to get to the porch.
Thanks guys!

would I watch Football in standard def or HD??

...mmmm HD.

I have Dishnetwork...so its probably similar. But I hate watching standard definition shows now. Just too grainy,choppy,fuzzy,blurry,colorless,4:3 stretched etc.

The HD channels are very much worth it.

The installer was just saying that so he could just get the job done. DirecTv installers dont get paid per hour. They get paid per job. Put yourself in his shoes. If you showed up to someones house and came across that situation. You will most likley give them options so you can still do the job. So now he left without making any money. I say HD is worth it. Once you see the HD channel i know you will not be watching the SD version of the channel. Like the post above if you like sports then thats one more reason to get HD

If you don't subscribe to HD sports, watch PPV movies, and if you don't watch channels like History, Discovery, Science, NatGeo, than it may not be worth it, but NFL in HD was what sucked me into big screens and led to my interest in home theater. When I first got my 52" LCD and DirecTV HDDVR, the Planet Earth series was on Discover HD Theater. My wife and I were in awe.

On the other hand, if you are only a casual watcher of sports and the types of channels above, you may be completely satisfied with the OTA local channels. I still have to get locals OTA. It's a weird thing, too. I am 25 miles away from the tower, and with my roof antenna I get a perfect signal in all weather. I know many who live in town (2-3 miles from tower) who don't get signals with set top antennas.

All the HD channels and other MPEG- content is on new satellites that are in a different location in the sky, and thus the dish requires a larger "window".

I don't have any of the special packages for sports, hbo, starz, etc. But I most definitely think that it is worth it. Besides the HD package, I also have the Directv HD Extra Pack. I do enjoy watching as much in HD as possible.

Right up against the back of the house. I'll basically have to walk around it everytime I walk to and from the porch.

Sorry...I use to have direct tv....i now have comcast.

Me and my wife joked about it a couple days ago....Its raining and we still can watch tv

I just would never suggest or myself have a dish...yeah there a little cheaper and with alot of channels...Just the service itself isnt that great to me.

they always had excuses to why the service wouldnt work also...too windy...raining too much...and when it wasnt raining here...maybe it was raining were the signal is coming from....

Do yourself a favor ...unless you live out in the boonies and cant get cable...GET CABLE

p.s. there internet is way faster also...

we pay 101.96 for digital cable...hd channels...dvr...and high speed internet

which isnt bad but i guess depends on how much your willing to spend

i would rather spend more than save a buck and be pissed when the tv goes in and out while trying to watch a game or a show.

That is it. But, I particularly enjoy things shown on Smithsonian, HD Net Movies, Universal HD, and to a lesser extent MGM.

My aunt has had a signal during Hurricane rain
It has to be installed right with good signal. Dont let the installer leave without having signal in the 90s on all sats. If you are getting Hidef those sats will be 101, 110, 119, 99 and 103

Wow, 166 views and only 25 voters, must not be a lot of DTV customers on here.
