Default Can I say...Yeh Blu-ray!!!

Wow! Just bought and hooked up the Sony BDP-S350 Blu-ray player to my Sony Bravia XBR2 Hdtv, and Bose 5.1 speaker setup. My wife and I just watched The Incredible Hulk on Blu-ray disc and....all I can say is, it's Christmas in November!!! What incredible picture and sound. The best! Salute Sony!

And HD sound would be ...7.1? My sound is fully digital through an optical cable with 5.1 Bose. I can't believe it would be dramatically different. Unless I'm missing something please explain

Congratulations for your jump in the world of HD.
If you already have experienced lossless sound then you have the best sound out there. The differene from 5.1 to 7.1 is just a couple of extra channels to give more depth to the surround sound. It's a nice extra but by no means vital if you have 5.1

HD sound does not mean 7.1.

HD sound is the uncompressed audio codec -- Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. Standard DVD and Blu-ray core codecs are the standard Dolby and DTS codecs.

You can get HD audio 2 ways with your player. You can have it decode the HD audio inside the player and send the HD audio via LPCM, or, if you had a receiver that decoded HD audio codecs, you could bitstream the HD audio to the receiver.

Once you have things set up like that, then you can enjoy HD audio.

BTW, I only have a 5.1 setup but still enjoy HD audio.

Yes, it is digital. However, it is lossy. Your Bose system is a bit behind technologically. You are missing something to be technical. And yes, it is a big difference. When did you buy your Bose system? If you can still return it, I can absolutely help you out and get a proper surround sound system. You can learn more about HD sound here. Have fun.

What do you mean 7.2 ???
There are no systems that I know of that use two speakers for the bass.
Or you are just not being serious my freemason friend.

Thanks. Yes my bose system is a bit behind the times. It is around 9 years old. When I got it back then it was the latest and greatest. And to be honest with you, it still blows me away. I have been learning and reading about the differences though. I get Dolby Digital and DTS, but not the True master HD DTS. For now, it will be fine but I will be looking for a new receiver in the future.

MANY folks run 2 or more subs. On my list of upgrades after 7.1.

And how do they connect 2 sub-woofers successfully ? I mean the system outputs 7.1 meaning there is only one channel for the sub-woofer or are we talking about some real 7.2 system ? cause I've never heard about that.

You can either use a Y-splitter from a one-sub-out receiver, or get a receiver that has two sub-out connections. Good read here:

Quexos, it's either a Y-splitter to convert the signal into two, or your receiver has more than 1 sub-out (i.e., Yamaha 663 has a pair) or your subwoofer has an additional sub-out (i.e., my Martin Logan Dynamo) to add another subwoofer. All very simple, actually.

You can run 7.1 audio, and DIVIDE the .1 part (Subwoofer) into two subwoofers, but it IS NOT 7.2, since the information can only be sent as 8 discrete channels, or "7.1" as we know it......

It's like connecting two additional speakers to the "B" speakers on an older 5.1 capable AVR, and calling it 7.1

No, it's more like matrixing the signal. It's just not discrete.

low frequencies unlike high frequencies is not (as) directional. So it does not matter if it is .1 or .2 on the disk, in a .2 system the two subs output the same thing, the benefits are in it being distributed (two lower ones instead of one higher one) and driving each sub less. An other good thing with a .2 system is that the second channel can be used for transducers (so not really audio)
