Default Best Blu Ray Player...

...for my money.

I am looking for a blu-ray player for my father for Christmas.

I do have a PS3, and I do not know if I would like to get another one.
I don't think I would want to spend $400 for one, as well.

Although the PS3 is extremely future proof. I would like just like to get a stand-alone player, $300 or under. (If I can find a PS3 for under $300, then I would grab it.)

I would like to know good players that have an ethernet port, BD-Live 2.0 and the best for future.

I would hate to have to constantly update and update just to watch a movie. Which is probably the biggest downfall for the Blu-ray format.

He does not have a DTS-HD, TrueHD or PCM reciever, but I hope in the future, he might get one.

Any help would be great, thanks.

EDIT - I Am Canadian!

EDIT 2 - I realized that multichannel analog is IMPORTANT to me, (due to having an receiver that doesn't do TrueHD or DTS-HDMA), 5.1 or higher is a MUST. So, Panny BD55 or Sony S550?

Thanks for that.
I just to go across border like crazy! (Buffalo to be exact)
But since the CDN dollar has dropped, it's bad.
It still might be a good purchase though!

Thanks!

A lot of people are praising the BDP350, sounds awesome.

What's wrong with the Samsung if I might add?

Hello fellow Canadian

Iam a owner of samsung bd-p1400 and have had no problems with my blu-ray player. The only thing thats happened is slow loading time, but this never bothered me.
With that being said ,I would go Sony because of all the trouble Other samsung owners have been having.
Iam very lucking i have no problems,But if i had to do it all again i would not take a chance with Samsung.
It's like a flip of a coin(if you listen to the people on this forum) ,You get a good unit or a bad one.I don't like those odds

By the way iam also buying a ps3 for a backup blu-player,$200.Iam connected

I seen a samsung bd-p1500 for 230 down here brand new still in box(never opened) if you want to take a chance i will look into it for you and see if i can still get it.But it's up to you

The 1500 decodes dolby true HD
The Sony s350 does not decode internally,Iam not say Sony is a bad player i just want to give you facts.

If your father has a older reciever than you might or should be able to get Dolby true HD sound Using the 1500 ,Hooking it up analog

My 1400 decodes it all,but i don't use it because my reciever does it for me now

Good luck with any choice you choose with you buget

I'll join the chorus and say Sony BDP-S350 too. I've had mine for two weeks and love it. No problems.

I have the 1500 and there are NO analog outputs on this player. Oh and for the record, I have not experienced any problems with my player except for the movie For Your Eyes Only (firmware coming in December). Load times on my player have been excellent, meaning fast. I bitstream audiophile to receiver to get all the "current" codecs. I think it's personal choice, but I am so sick and tired of sony this, and sony that. Makes me want to puke.

The S350 has tested as having better Blu-Ray and SD video quality. Samsung's firmware support has been less than stellar in the past, that alone would make me lean towards the S350.

Iam so sorry,
I really thought it had at least 5.1 analog in the back I would of sworn to that.
But it still decodes internally.

So you don`t have any problems with your 1500 and i don`t have any problems with my 1400.

Now work with me for a second,

When you go to the 1500 or 1400 thread all you see are complaints,And why.Because people that don`t have any problems don`t find the need to go on a forum for help,But if you are having problems the first place most people go is to a thread on there player to get help.

So thats why i think some people hear think samsung suck.
you have people here trying to fix there own players or get help and b*tch about whats happening to them.Thats why we hear more bad about Samsung then good

You don`t hear a new member that much that start off like this:
`Hi i just joined this forum and thread to tell you guy`s i love my 1400`

It`s more like this:
`Hi guy`s . I just joined this forum can you help me, The HULK.It won`t play .I have 1.9 firmware WHATS WRONG`

Get my point

there has been problems with players, no doubt,But check out the other threads, a lot of problems

Remember ,iam not talking about the 1000 or 1200 models.Ya they were bad and the support was bad.Never had bad support with my 1400.

I hope this made a little sense,But i believe i have a valid point

But belive it or not i would still take sony

PS3 --> I have sell my PS3 60gb for $.250.-

I say Sony S550.

for a "big" player I dont no from Marantz 8002 or Denon 3800......
But this 2 models in 6 month are sure "NO MORE AVAILABLE - PRODUCT REPLACED!!""

I buy a S550, not a lot of money and if come a new model I can upgrade without much money losing.
The oppo in Swizterland is not much available...but I think will be a good "gear" - I dont like design but will work very fine.
